AMA District 37 Desert Championship Series Round 4: 4 Aces Moose Run Hare & Hound PHOTO BV GRUMPV It's Norman Stormin' Moose Run! By KANDY THORNYON RED MOUNTAIN, CA, FEB. 13 A MA District 37 off-road racers are being confronted week I"-\after week with something they're not used to - epic racing conditions. Recent rains once again made the Mojave Desert a perfect playground for the 480 participants at the 55th annual 4 Aces Moose Run Hare & Hound. The 4 Aces staged at Teagle Wash and provided a fun family weekend, with a Euro Scramble on Saturday, along with a Kid's Ride and Adult Mini Challenge, but they saved the best for Sunday with their creative and wellthought-out Hare & Hound course. Dust-free conditions provided for tight racing at aJl levels, but the most noticeable was for first overall, between American Honda rider Kendall Norman and Mike Childress, each on his XR650R. Childress grabbed the holeshot on the bomb on his XR's Only/GPRlO'Neal Honda and collected the $100 holeshot bonus. Norman sneaked by Childress on his Precision Concepts! O'NeaVAlpinestars/BRP Honda. and they came into the pits only a few seconds apart. The spectators could teU this was going to be a battle to the end as the two riders thundered back out across the valley. ':.\fter the pits, Mikey and I traded the lead back and forth for about 10 miles." stated Norman at the finish. "It's the best when you get to battle with someone you know won't take you out," Childress added. "We were only Ia feet apart from each other for I a miles!" Once they headed into a technical section, Norman was able to take the lead, and he remained there for the rest of the race. "When the course got technical, I just got in a groove and was able to do my thing." stated Norman. "We both made a couple of mistakes," said Childress. "and then Kendall just rode really good in the rocks, and I just couldn't get him back." Norman finished first overall, with Childress second. Luke Dodson rounded out the podium overalL Viewfinder club members Charley Barney and Max Eddy Jr. fought their own personal war out on the course. Despite riding in different classes, things can get personal when a member of your club is within your sights. "I caught Max about three-quarters of the way through the first loop." recalled Barney. "We swapped the lead back and forth a bunch of tlmes, got lost together, stopped and talked, and then played all the way to the finish'" Eddy had a slightly different take on the "playing." "Barney was showing me some good lines," Eddy said, "but I got tired of taking a face full of roost off that big four-stroke, so I had to do something about it." Eddy was able to get by Barney on his LR's Motozone/5idi KTM 125. and he came into the finish 12th overall and second in the 0-200cc Expert class, while Barney was the first Senior Open Expert finisher. Eric Faught was the top overall Amateur finisher, and Justin Anderson claimed top honors for the Novice line. eN 4 ACES MOOSE RUN HARE & HOUND RED MOUNTAIN, CAUFORNIA RESULTS: FEBRUARY 13, 2005 (ROUND 4) alA: I. Danny laPorte still has speed [0 burn, and he proved it at the Mesquite MotoX Park, site of round two of the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC World Off-Road Championship Series. Competing in the Masters Over 40 A class on his FMF/909/No Fear-backed Suzuki RM-Z450, the 1982 250cc World MX Champ faced several former title holders, including fellow Over 40 racers Gary Jones (three-time AMA 250cc MX champ) and Andrew Jefferson (defending Masters Over 40 class champ).
