Northwest Arenacross Nationals Series Final Round: Forster Livestock Pavilion PHOTO BY CLAY LIGHT Metzler, Lacey Strike in Salem! lead on the third lap, trailed by Crater, who this year is BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, campaigning the 250c( class during the Western portion of the FEB. 13 A. MA National and Supercross regular Ty "Tiger" Lacey was /""\the dominant performer at the final round of the Lee Collinspromoted Northwest Arenacross Nationals, held at Forster livestock Pavilion on the Oregon State Fairgrounds. The Honda rider won both 2SOcc Pro motos and also topped the opening 12Scc Pro moto before succumbing to a nat rear tire in moto two. Oregon's Adam Metzler, making his Pro-class debut, showed everyone that he's ready for the highest level of motocross after placing 3-1 in the I25cc class and netting the overall win. Lacey had things going his way in the opening I25cc Pro mota, although shortly into the moto he and Metzler bumped and Lacey dropped to third. Lacey qUickly mounted a charge to catch both Metzler and Tracy Johnson. and by lap four he'd opened up a large lead. Metzler and Washington's johnson had a great battle over second, which ultimately went to johnson after an off-course excursion on Metzler's part resulted in a stream of banners entangled in his rear wheel. Lacey, johnson, Menler, Rory Sullivan and Washington's Greg Crater completed the top fIVe. Mota two appeared to be another Lacey runaway, but on lap four the Gomez Motorsports-backed rider's rear tire went flat. This allowed Menler to close the gap and overtake Lacey for the lead without much of a fight, and the race became a showcase of the Suzuki-mounted, Mot.oSports Outlet /Hillsboro-sponsored Metzler's exceptional talents. Metzler held a good-sized lead to the finish. Crater overcame a poor start to trail Metzler at the finish, followed by former National number holder Billy Binckley. Johnson and then Lacey, who fought off challenges from Kenny Webster on the final lap to place fifth. Overall, Metzler (3-1). Johnson (2-4), Lacey (I-S), Crater (S-2) and Binckley (6-3) were the top five. Lacey fared much better in the 250cc Pro class, trailing only johnson for a brief portion of the opening mota. Lacey took the AHA Supercross Series. Crater remained in Lacey's shadow to finish second. ahead of Metzler (who was this time riding a two· stroke Suzuki). Sullivan and Johnson. Lacey's sweep of the 2SOcc class was complete after a win in moto two, again followed by Crater, the second-place finisher overall. Sullivan placed his Honda on the podium with 4-3 finishes, ahead of impressive rookie Metzler (4-S) and Johnson (S-6). Southern Oregon speedster William See was one of the few double-class winners on the day. See snared the overall Supermini and BScc (12-13) class wins to join Cobra-mounted Wyatt Fowler, Mitch Schlottman, Nick Bergley and Matt Wilson in that select circle. Wilson went one step further than the rest of the competition: The Honda rider from Eugene won the 12Scc, Before The Hill and Four-Stroke Intermediate classes, battling with such top riders as Guy Tow and Matt Fouts. Tow, who was impressive in his 250cc Intermediate-class win, trailed FORSTER LIVESTOCK PAVIUON SALEM, OREGON RE5UIJS: FEBRUARY 13, 2005 (FiNAl ROUND) P/W (0-6). I. "yon BU'l:&,en (Cob): 2. Blue skies and pleasant temperatures greeted the nearly 200 riders in attendance. Announcer Alan Cherpak kept the spectators on top of the action throughout the 2a-race before low-siding and dropping to fifth. Michigan Pro Brian Schuiteman placed third. Young slid under Borders' RM-Z250 for second in race two. The rookie Pro didn't give Young a moment's rest and crossed the finish line less than a bikelength behind. Schuiteman was fourth on his YZ. Borders ran ahead of Young in the first 250cc Money mota. The pair swapped second place several times before Young moved ahead for good at the halfway point. He had a clear shot at Hopkins, but he couldn't close the gap. Hopnintoa, New Hampshire's Steve Avery engineered a late-race charge aboard his Honda and closed on Borders. The three riders took the checkers in close order. program of the Cycle Nation/Circle B Hopkins' only challenge for the lead all day Contracting/DeMott Tractor/Extreme MXsponsored event. Boyle left the door open in a berm; Kendall went inside, the pair made contact, and Boyle hit the deck. Cherpak moved back out from on lap three and scored the win, over Blane and Kendall.
