Off the start, Buttrick followed Ashburn around the first turn and most of the first lap. At the end of the lap, Ashburn made a mistake coming out of the woods, allowing Buttrick to take the lead away from him. Over the next three laps, both riders pulled away from the rest of the pack, and they swapped the lead several times, with Midtown Body Shop/Moose/Maxxis-backed Buttrick making his last pass in the woods. "On the third lap, I wrecked and got crossrutted," Ashburn said. "He [Buttrick] passed me, and I couldn't catch him." Duell Murphy from Huntington, Indiana, finished third in the Junior A class. "The track was pretty tough," Murphy noted. Tanner Byarly was the top rider in the Junior B class. He worked hard for his win. Off the start, he was in third place, behind Richard Brewer and Zach Nash, who got the holeshot. But Byarly set the Pro Action turf on fire with an aggressive move into first place: On the first off-camber downhill, Brewer hit a slick rock and went headfirst over his bars, and Byarly passed him. Then Byarly encountered troubles of his own: He got lost on the trail and went about a mile or more than he had to, so he backtracked his way to the trail and charged after Tyler Carter, because he thought Carter was in first place. By the end of the second lap, Byarly found out that he was the one in first place, not Carter. Byarly eased up on the throttle, finished in first place, and then signed up for points for this season. "I had a great ride today, and I love a difficult trail," Nash said, "I was right with him [Byarly] for the first couple of laps, but I got caught behind some lappers and couldn't get around them. I was happy to get second place." RESULTS P!W (4-6): I. Eli Holbrook; 2. Samuel Thurman (KTM); 3. Tyler Bottoms (KTM); 4. Ben Jones (KTM); 5. Kenneth Wolfe (KTM). P!W (7-8): I. Brad They May Be Cool, But They Couldn't Get Shorty erfect weather and track conditions graced round three of the Mutant Motorsports! Mission Motorcycles/Tracy Chevrolet/Extreme Motorsports Winter Storm Series at Carnegie SVRA. Twenty-something motos smoothly went down into the lap sheets twice, per the twomoto format. A change to the first corner from a full switchback to a right tum made the full· gate starts more fluid and trouble-free. James "Shorty" Velasco took advantage of that, snaring some great starts in the Novice classes aboard his Betancourt Racing/Camp I Suspension/Cancilla Racing/Krause Family YZ2S0F. Velasco's confidence may have been wavering after his first round of motos, with Wil McDonough putting in a rock-steady, unbeatable performance in the 2S0cc Novice class and Daniel Duarte and McDonough beating Velasco to the checkers in the 125cc Novice class. "No pressure," said an apparently unfazed Velasco. "I just try my hardest every mota." Maybe Veiasco had a Red Bull or two during the intermission, because he came out blazing in the second motos, leading from the green to the checkers in both motos. Dominic Marchewka fell in behind Velasco in the 250cc Novice class, followed by Yobie Jacobson. McDonough finished fourth, which was good enough for second overall, behind Velasco's overall win. Later in the day, Velasco's 3-1 performance in the 125cc Novice class would tie McDonough's strong 2-2 tally, but Velasco would get the nod for the overall due to the better finish in the second moto. In the Intermediate classes, Mission Motorcycies/One Industries/No Fear/FMF/ Vortex-backed Greg Karmann battled Nick Markert in all four motos. "I fell and lost the first mota, but I won every other mota," Karmann said. "He [Markert] was right behind me when we were on the 4S0s." Karmann ended up with a pair of overalls in the 12Scc Intermediate and 250cc Intermediate classes, thanks to I-I and 2-1 finishes. Pendergrass. Lone Wolf Cycle's Blake Webb was third. The day's three-way battie in the SOcc (7-8) division came to an exciting conclusion on the last lap of the final mota. Always under pressure, Colby Pyburn held on to the lead on every lap, only to see Alan Sparks go by in the final turn. Sparks netted a perfect score, over Pyburn. Jordan Quarles had made a bid for the lead early in the final mota but suffered a spill and had to settle for third overall. MSRlScott-backed Quarles had better luck in the SOcc Open contest, winning both motos_ Sparks edged Pyburn in a points tie for the runner-up honors. In the 12Scc Beginner class, series leader Josh Sanders rode steadily and won both motos. Jake Patterson held the lead briefly in both motos, but both times out he crashed out of contention. Tyler Moore and Jas01'1 Scott rounded out the podium. Mutant Motorsports Winter Storm Series Round 3: Carnegie SVRA CARNEGIE, CA, FEB. 6 TUNNel HILL, GA, FEB. 6 56 RESULTS By KRIS HALLEE Bell Towers Over the Hill att Bell rang up six moto wins to claim the gold in I15cc Youth, Supermini and ascc (12-1 S) racing at Tunnel Hill MX, site of round six of the Mid-South Winter MX Series. Dalton Motorsports' Kris Swaney swept all four motos in the A divisions. One of the oldest motocross tracks in Georgia, Tunnel Hill MX is known locally as "the motocross track you can see from 1-75." MidSouth Winter MX Series promoter Darrel Lynn bought the track in 2002 and has steadily improved the facility. Lynn worked hard to get the track prepared for Sunday's event, and his efforts garnered many compliments from the riders. In addition to the good track conditions, the weather was warm and beautiful. Kirk's Cycle/SYD/Bridgestone/Thor-backed Bell seems to have fully recovered from injuries suffered last November. In addition to his three class wins, he also claimed runner-up honors in the 12Scc B class, behind Chase Beck, Another rider on the comeback trail after an injury is Nick Phipps, who finished second behind Bell in the BScc (12-1 S) class. Series leader Zane Rollins was third. Behind Bell in the Youth division, Michael Adams and Chad Whidby wrestled for the silver in both motos. Despite Whidby's efforts, Adams never lost his grip on second spot. Series leader Whidby had to settle for the bronze. Whidby returned in the 12Scc C contest and won both motos. Keeping the pressure on Whidby from second position both times out was Ben Thomas, aboard his Kawasaki. Josh Roberson, a recent graduate from the Mini ranks, earned the final podium spot. levi Long showed promise and led briefly at the start of moto one but was sidelined with bike problems in the early going. Thomas switched brands for the 250cc C class and gassed his big red machine to a perfect score, ahead of fellow Honda pilot Zack win in the final mota gave him the edge in a points tie over Oakes. Series leader Eric Newby was third. start to a qualifier for an AMA Pro National: fast and furious. Trevor Doniak and Billy Jurevich grabbed great starts in the first mota, with Buffalo Soito sandwiched in between them. Doniak maintained the gap to earn the firstmota victory, followed by Saito and Jurevich. Nick Davis is usually a sure bet for a top-two finish, but a supercross-qualifying injury kept Davis off his usually blistering pace, and he settled in sixth (although he would find his speed in the 12Scc Pro class, taking the overall win). The second 2S0cc Pro moto was full of more surprises: Dustin Bloomfield worked his way past Matt Gaines on the second lap and then kept it steady to slip by Jurevich laps later. He crossed the finish line in first, throwing his fist in the air for the crowd. Bloomfield's ride would be good enough for second overall. Doniak kept it consistent with 1-2 finishes for the overall victory. Heath Robertson from Washington earned the farthest-drive award, as well as third overall. RESULTS SO BEG: I.
