Texas Offroad Racing Organization
Round 7: Brian Storrie's Grand Prix
Leivan Wraps Up
a Wet One
By

DENTON, TX, FEB. 5·6
T
he final round of the Texas Offroad Racing Organization's
fourth season was a wet one. The area had been hit by a
ton of rain, and everything was saturated. In fact. according to
the National Weather Service. 2004 was one of the flve wettest
years ever in the Dallas area. It didn't help matters that it rained
the entire Saturday night prior to the race.
SCR/Yamaha/Answer/Dunlop's Steve Leivan had the AA title
wrapped up, but he came down from Missouri to race anyway.
"The race was shortened to four laps due to the gnarly
conditions and worsening course," Leivan noted. "I rode a
cautious first lap and kept it on two wheels. Most everyone
crashed at least once that lap. and I worked my way around the
fallen riders and into third behind Man Crouch and Dwain Carter.
"Caleb Ramsay and David Widmer were riding fast on lap
two, and both got around me," Leivan continued. "On lap
three, I worked my way back around Ramsay and closed in on
Carter. I chose a rut with more traction in a section of
switchbacks to overtake Carter near the end of lap three.
Widmer was the only one left in front of me, and he had a 15second lead. He fell in a slick turn and had trouble getting up. I
got around him and tried to pick the shallowest rues and keep
my momentum for another few miles to hold on for the win."
"I should have had that win!" exclaimed Xtreme Powder
Coacing/SMS Racing/M4 Exhaust-sponsored Widmer. "I got
roosted pretty good by Ramsay and Crouch early on and had to
slow to be able to see. I fell back to last and thought I would
just see how far up I could move. I was riding realty aggressive
and started catching up and moving past people. I took the lead
with about a half a lap to go when I began to ride cautiously. Big
mistake! That's when a lapper popped out of a berm, and I
went down. I was stuck under my bike, and about 30 or 40
seconds later, Leivan got by. I didn't have long enough to catch
up before the end."
At 32, Widmer has been racing for 28 years. In 1997, he
broke his back at a motocross race. It took him four years and
some prodding from his friend and fellow AA rider Brian Storrie
to get him back on a bike, but he did.
"That day on the firn lap, I was an Amateur," Widmer said, "the
second, [I was] an Intermediate, and by the third lap I was back to
Expert speed. By the fourth lap, Brian was getting preny mad!"
Motorsports/MSR/Gaerne rider Matt Crouch took second
place this MSR/Answer-sponsored TORO season. G&S
SuzukVMoose/Scon's Mark Weeks was one point down in third.
Then came Widmer, and SMS Racing/Motion Cycle Sports,lThor
rider Dwain Carter rounded out the top fIVe in the M class.
