By CLAY LIGHT WOODLAND, WA, FEB. 12 ark Sullivan and his son Andrew were among the dominant riders at round five of the Northwest Vintage & Evolution M Motocross Championship Series, held at Woodland Motocross Park in southwest Washington. Despite the sloppy conditions. Mark scored a pair of overall Vintage~c1ass victories, posting the 2S0cc and Over 40 Expert-class wins. Andrew, riding a Honda. won the Four-Stroke Expert class and placed third overall to Mark and Oregon's Joe Casey in the 2S0cc class. More than 200 riders from throughout the Northwest and Canada braved the wind and rain, which made for muddy conditions for the first time this series. There were several impressive performers in the soupy conditions, including CZ riders Brett Giboney and Chris Clark. Giboney, riding an unusual CZ-powered GS machine with hand-crafted parts built in the early 1970s, won both 250cc Intermediate-class motos. Giboney had tough competition in both motos, but in the end, he prevailed each time out. Honda riders Jeff Nelson and Erik Sullivan placed second and third overall to Giboney, via 2-2 and 3-3 finishes, followed by Bultaco riders Bryan Anderberg and Travis Anderberg. In the adjoined 250cc Expert class, Suzuki TM250-mounted Mark Sullivan slammed the competition in the second moto and, with his second-place first-mota finish, he came away with an overall win. Casey, who beat both Sullivans to the finish in moto one, couldn't replicate his earlier performance and finished second to Mark in mota two. Anderberg, who rides a 1974 Bultaco 2SOcc Pursang, had his best moments of the day in the first Over 40 Intennediate moto. Anderberg, who frequently makes the seven-hour trek from Spokane, Washington, beat CZ rider Kevin Blackburn to the finish Hunter Whitley (Han): 4. Chase Greening (Kaw): 5. Chad Farmer (Han). Chowchilla Bam Burner Winter Series Chowchilla Fairgrounds Bonsey Bounces Backl By KAREN GOULD CHOWCHILLA, CA, FEB. 5 w: th five of I I races completed in the Chowchilla Barn Burner Winter Series, the points contenders have been determined. This week's events included more than 100 riders contesting 19 main events. On the top of his game again, KLH Racing Presents-sponsored Stevie Bonsey came from the third spot in both his heat race and the main event of the Open A contest to finish first. Too light to get a lot of traction on the start, Bonsey maneuvered his way around the track using both the inside and outside lines to pick off those in front of him. Engines Only-sponsored Chris Canepa also won his heat race and got the holeshot in the A main, but Bonsey made his way under Bradiey Spencer Jr. on lap five and then under Canepa on lap eight for the victory. 68 in the opening moto, but it was Erik Sullivan and his potent Husqvarna doing damage in moto two. Erik, however, finished third in the first moto, and Anderberg's 1-2 placings were good enough to give him his best overall finish of the day. Sullivan (3-1), Blackburn (2-3) and CZ rider Mark Baer (4-4) completed the trophy positions. Mark reigned in both Over 40 Expert motos, leading Husqvarna-mounted Bill Grubin and Christopher "Siege" James overall. This completed Sullivan's stellar day. Grubin, who for years campaigned Honda Elsinores, has adapted well to the Swedish marque and, after trailing Chris Clark in both Open Expert matos, he finished the day with a pair of overall second-place finishes. Christopher Delaire completed the top three overall. Husqvarnas were also represented well in the Evolution portion of the program, as Lyndel Raphael and J.R. Cunningham were among the overall winners. Cunningham captured both Over 40 Intermediate motos, while Raphael won the 250cc Intennediate class. Raphael and Chris Walther split moto wins in the class, but it was Raphael's moto-two Victory that propelled him to the head of the class. Walther, who won mota one, placed fifth in moto two after some problems and trailed Raphael and Maico-mounted John Daniels overall. eN WOODLAND MOTOCROSS PARK WOODLAND, WASHINGTON RESULTS: FEBRUARY 12,2005 (ROUND Bonsey was ahead of the pack again in the 2S0-and-Up Money race. He led Canepa, Joe Hernandez Jr. and teammate Patrick McNamara to the finish. Brad Spencer Sr., aboard a Bud Martin-built vintage Honda 350, put on a show of his own in the Vet A event. The elder Spencer bobbled at the start and went into the first tum at the end of the seven-rider pack. By lap four, he was fourth. in typical Spencer style, he used the outside line to get by his competitors until he achieved the second pOSition. His final challenge was to pass former national rider "Crazy Craig" Johnson, who gave him the opening he sought: On lap nine of this 12-lap event, Spencer Sr. went under Johnson for the lead and, ultimately, the victory. Johnson and Mike Besemer rounded out the podium. Washington State's J.D. Beach, the nation's number-one AMA 85cc rider, took home the cash in the 85cc Money race, despite stiff competition from California boys Michael Avila and Briar Bauman, who finished behind Beach. Those three riders and four more lined up for the 85cc A event. Tulare Honda/Donnie and Lisa Harrell-sponsored Avila got the holeshot and took this race pole to pole, with Bauman and Beach follOWing. Christian "Weasel" Hickman, who has increased his speed and skill by leaps and bounds, was first to the first corner in the Open Two-Stroke race, and he just kept going. He finished first by a full straight ahead of Beach and Bronson Bauman.
