Winter Twister Ice Stunt Bikin' Championship Sunset Tavern and Marina Urban Legend in His Own Time Bv DAN SCHMITT LAKE KOSHKONONG, WI, JAN. 30 T he inaugural World Championship Ice Stunt event was held on Lake Koshkonong, in front of the Sunset Tavern. Tom Gimmer cleared off a 2000-by-50-foot strip to set the stage. With both individual and team events, hundreds of fans ventured onto the ice to witness this unique event. Using the rules set down by one of the competitive organizations, it was evident that two of the planned events would not work on this ice surface. The Coaster Wheelie and the No-Handed Wheelie events were a big disappointment to fans and competitors alike. However, the next event, the Slowest Wheelie contest, infused great enthusiasm in the fans. With three chances to go, the slowest between the cones (located 100 feet apart) would be the winner - and that was Andy "Phatty" Lancaster. the slowest at 5: 16. Second went to Dan Look from Section Eight, who went 4:77. Darin Mihlbauer came in third with a 4:61. The objective of the next competition was to keep both wheels on the ice at all times, so the Acrobatic Freestyle event required the riders to perform slides and tricks on their bikes for the judges and the fans. Hondamounted Dan Urban and Suzuki-mounted Ryan Suchanek tied for second with 75 points each as they performed various slides on their bikes. Joe Beaver won hands down by standing on his Honda 9OO's gas tank and removing his helmet, putting it on backward, and then throwing it to the cheering fans. Suchanek looked pretty good in the Individual Premier Freestyle competition, performing good wheelies back and forth. He thrilled the crowd with a one-handed fullthrottle spin of his bike as he stood in the middle to conclude his routine. Look sat on the gas tank of his CBR 929 and had his feet in the air to entertain the fans, but the conditions of the ice were deteriorating, so he couldn't get all of his wheelies to work, and he came in second. It was Urban who put it all together, with his 48 legs over the windscreen, standing on the seat and waving to the fans. He had the best program and took the victory. In the Team competition, the Vertical Mischief crew put on the best show. All four teammates wheelied back and forth, with Phatty doing slow, controlled wheelies. Their grand finale was a showstopper; the "Spin for Life." Beaver stood on the side of his Honda, lifted it slightly and, with a full throttle, spun it in a tight circle. The fans went wild, and the Mischief boys took home the Team trophy and heavy cash. RESULTS COASTER WHEElIE: I. Ryan Suchanek (Suz). NOHAND WHEElIE: I. Dan Urban (Hon). SLOW WHEElIE: t. Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit, Championship Division Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit, High Plains Division Rounds I II: Macy Ranch Hogan Handles the Renegade Bv BIU KAMIN POST, TX, JAN. 30 on Hogan topped a field of riders hungry for competition after their holiday hibernation. Hogan's white-hot 4.0242 was the best of any offered up. Hogan pulled a freight train of greats through the course: Michael Wilson, who overalled the Championship division in 2004, was barely a card flip behind at 5.0277; last year's event winner, Mark Thompson, was a few seconds behind Wilson; and the 2004 High Plains Overall winner, Cole Kirkpatrick, was the jet-propelled caboose. "This was a great event - the new trail was excellent and showed a lot of effort by the club, and the course markings were really well done, and the checkworkers were fantastic," said Hogan, the Sabine 2004 Overall champ, who rides out of his own shop, Honda-KawasakiKTM West of Fort Worth. "My dad's support really makes the difference." Former Pro racer Nub Stovall. Renegade trails president. led the crew in putting together a memorable opening event for the 2005 TSCEC season. The crew spent weeks dearing new trails through the beautiful Macy Ranch. The weather cooperated as well, providing great traction and not a speck of dust. While the first of the 240 competitors met with 40-degree temperatures and a steady mist, the increasing speed averages helped everyone warm up. A variety of twisting sand washes, rolling hills and fast trails lined with snarling mesquite generated plenty of heat, while draining the strength from competitors' bodies. High water in the river demanded a creative solution from the hard-working crew. A flatbed trailer became a bridge, where more than a few riders slid out on the mud-covered ramps. An unlucky few slid off the edge into the water, and a few tried creative lines through the river. "At least you could still see their handlebars," noted one observer. The third loop began with 13.B miles at 18 mph. It ramped up to 24 for the final nine miles of deep sand, fast chicanes, and some killer single-track through the rockier sections of the ranch. Here riders were treated to the infamous Bulldozer Hill, a pucker-inflicting downhill that left no margin for error. Mitch Elson overalled the A division. Aaron Nichols rode his four-stroke Honda to the head of the C Novice division. Scott Grey claimed the Age overall, and Bill Kamin won the first round in the new Super Senior A class. David Stuart topped Senior B, and Josh Dailey won the 16 and Under Small-Wheel class. Cameron D Kirkpatrick made the best of his move up with a first in 200cc A competition. Nick Brozovich overalled the C division here at the Macy Ranch in 2004, and now the B division in 2005. His 9.0475 put hi at sixth overall - despite two flats. "lowe a lot to Good Times PowerSports for helping me with my Kawasaki assist ride." said an excited Brozovich. ':And my mom and dad made a great pit crew." Great conditions, friendly workers, wellmarked trails and fast scoring made this event hard to match. It seems there's only one choice for TSCEC Enduro of the Year. RESULTS O/A EVENT: I.
