Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series Cross Country Motorsports Championship Round 9: Pro Action PHOTO BY DEBBIE ALLEN Allen On the Gas, Summers Out of Gas BY DEBBIE AllEN CROFTON, KY, FEB. 6 S ome guys have all the luck, and such was the case for several riders at Mid-South's ninth round of the Cross Country Motorsports Championship. Pro Action set the stage in Crofton, Kentucky. There were perfect conditions for a perfect setting. In the end, Scott Summers ran out of gas, while Team Green Kawasaki/Fox/Shift/Tire Bails/Dunlop-supported P.A. Allen was on it. "The track was awesome," said Allen. "I had a really good ride today, but it was pretty much back and forth the first two laps. I got the holeshot, and about a mile in, John Robbins passed me. I was happy, because I didn't want to lead the first lap. It was pretty messy, and I fell about halfway through it. That moved me back to last place." By the second lap, Allen and Summers' charge was under way. Allen caught up to Summers, who was in first place, and they pulled away from the rest of the 12 men in the AA pack. Allen took a better line going down a hill, passed Summers, and then pulled away until he was slowed down by a bottleneck. Then it was Summers' turn to take the lead, "P.A. passed me in that same exact line that he did the lap before," Summers said, "so then we rode together for a while. I passed him, and we were separated by about 30 seconds." Then Summers went down hard, along with another rider. Afterward, Summers realized that, while on his side, he had probably lost just enough gas to lose the race. Sure enough, two turns from the finish, Summers was stuck. Ten seconds later, Allen cruised by him. "PA. rode really well today," said Summers, "so I'm happy for him. It was my fault, because I normally take a little bottle of gas with me at the start, and I didn't do that; plus you normally burn a little more gas when it's muddy." "I gave it all I could to catch him," said Allen. "On the last lap, Summers ran out of gas about a ISO yards short, so I beat him. I would really like to thank my sponsors, and it was fun racing with Summers." The remaining front-runners were John Maschino, Robbins, and Brett Zofchak. Off Road Group/Gas Gas/Hebo/Leader-supported Maschino got second place, while Cycle Shed/KTMlThor/IMS-sponsored Robbins made third and Zofchak finished out the top five, "This was a fast course"" said Robbins. "You really had to watch your lines and be there at the finish." In the Masters class, Charles Vanway had an awesome ride. He said it was tough and very demanding, but he loved every minute of it. He finished in third place, behind class winner Foster Pearson and runner-up Lonnie Watson. eN PRO ACTION CROFTON, KENTUCKY RESULTS: FEBRUARY 6, 2005 (ROUND 9) O/A: I. PA Allen (Kaw): 2. With more than 40 kids signed up and ready to go. the Pee Wees were lined up first, anxious for that holeshot. Their course was a premium three-quarter-mile loop of a kids' motocross track and natural terrain across a pond dam and on through some "log jams." Taking off first was the Beginner Pee Wee class. They had a tricky time trying to manage those small miniature tires on the slick parts of the track. Lots of new faces were present, but two contenders hold the reins in this class. Upcoming rider Dave Myatt rode outstandingly, stealing third place from Dawson Weaver and leaving fifth for Ryan Gilbert. Eight-year-old Ashton Knight made his debut a winning one in the midst of heavy KTMmounted competition in the Pee Wee class. The Mississippi third-grader took the lead quickly on the first lap. "Ashton and Steve did a good job'" The Kids Intermediate and Vet course was approximately 3 1/2 miles long, including a mile of motocross track and parts of the adult hare scrambles course full of rolling hills and off·camber trails bordering the Desoto National Forest. Sawyer Shoemake of Bruce, Mississippi, won first place in Kids Intermediate class without a single crash. He thanked Scott, Twin Air, Regina Chain and his dad for all their help at the races. Gatlin Hubbard and Conner Mills battled for second, with Hubbard prevailing. "I had a great race today," Hubbard said. "Loved the track." Cody McMahan was proud of his fourthplace finish and noted that Stephen Reed was his favorite hare scrambles rider. In 2004, Jordyn DuBose was mostly undefeated, but in the Kids Vet class, DuBose has major competition breWing up for 2005, as Richard Brewer took this day's class victory. "I had a little trouble off the start," DuBose said. "It took me a few kicks to get my bike
