Wharton held off Hall by a bikelength at the finish in moto two for second place, with Hall fighting back GREG ROBERTSON ANZA, CA, FEB. 6 R ound fiye of the GFI Racing/AMP Racing/Dunlop/Mechanix Wear-sponsored Winter Series South was played out on the high-speed, natural-terrain layout of the Cahuilla Creek Motocross Track. Ryan Hughes and Kyle Cunningham found the dark, loamy conditions to their liking, as Hughes dominated both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, while Cunningham strung together four straight moto wins to top the Supermini and 80cc Expert fields. Suzuki-mounted Daniel Sani won the drag race up Cahuilla's long start straight to lead Hughes, Kazuma Masuda and Kenjiro Tsusi as the 2S0cc Pros took to the track for the first time. Hughes was untouchable, stretching his lead to a comfortable 15 seconds at the checkers. Masuda finished in second, while feeling some pressure from both Tsusi and 5ani on the final circuit. Hughes quickly made his way to the front of the pack in moto two and disappeared with an even bigger lead. Tsusi settled into second place but had his hands full with Sani for the first haif of the moto before pulling away to collect the second.place payback on 3-2 finishes. His 5-3 rides earned Sani the third-place cash, over the 4-4 score of Takese Tanake and the 8-5 efforts of Akra Narita. Both I25cc Pro motos saw Hughes establish early leads, with Narita keeping him honest - at least for the first half of both races. His 2-3 rides gave Narita the second-place money, topping the 3-4 score of Tetsuya Mizoguchi and the 4-5 tally of Tomonori Nakamuri. Cunningham was flawless in each of his Supermini races, making his way to the front of the fieid on the opening lap and easily checking out for a pair of wins. Blake Wharton dropped out of moto one while holding down second place. Michael Hall picked up the slack for a pair of runner-up finishes, followed by Blake Baggett (3-3) and Dakota Tedder (7-4). Cunningham was just as impressive aboard his Team GreenfThousand Oaks-sponsored KX8S in the 80cc Expert class, cranked. It was a good track; a little muddy, too." All in all, the day went great. With this many kids showing up for the hare scrambles, it seems we're in for another exciting year. Remember, all kids are winners in SERA! RESULTS BEG P/W: I. Rudy Ferguson (Kaw): 2. By JUSTIN WHARTON WOODLAND, WA, JAN. 30 oodland MX Park showcased some riding. Sunny skies lured a lot of riders out of the woodwork, but it was Woodland regular J.J. Niemi who ruled the day. In the first 12Scc Expert moto, the Answer W from a bad start in mota two to go 3-2 for second in the final standings. Baggett (4-3) and Wharton (2-5) earned third and fourth overall. respectively_ Consistency played into the hands of Montclair Yamaha's Brett Bussey, as he picked up the 80ce Beginner-class victory without winning either moto. Tanner Lovgren led the first couple of circuits of mota one before Tyler Kezer got by for the win. Lovgren ended up third, over Mason Rodriguez. Moto two was all Cole Seeley's, as he went wire to wire uncontested. Bussey's lonely second-place finish was just enough for the overall, topping the 1-4 score of Kezer and the 5-1 tally of Seeley. eN CAHUILlA CREEK MOTOCROSS TRACK ANZA, CAUFORNIA RESULTS: FEBRUARY 6, 2005 (ROUND 5) 50 STK (7.8): I. Niemi was clocking some of the quickest lap times of the day, and he appeared to be untouchable. Behind Niemi, Derek Campbell and Jake Anstett were putting on a serious battle. Anstett has been an Amateur Nationals regular, while Campbell is an Expert-class rookie, but Campbell has been improving dramatically lately, and it showed. The Anstettand-Campbell battle only got fiercer with time, and when Niemi took the checkered nag. they were still battling. Anstett had a faster line coming into the finish-line straight, and he edged out Campbell for second. In the second moto, it was once again an allNiemi show, as the Yamaha rider was on fire. Niemi's fellow Pro Caliber rider Chris Holum stayed close at first. but he slowly lost time to Niemi during the race. Anstett didn't have things going his way in the second mota, and he struggled through the pack. Niemi took an easy win, followed by Holum, Campbell, Garhett Carter and Anstett. Niemi (I-I) took the overall win, Holum (4-2) took second, and Campbell (3-3) rounded out the podium in third. Anstett (2-5) took fourth, and Carter (5-4) took fifth. The first 250cc Expert moto saw former Mini stars Niemi and Anstett up front and ahead of many experienced veterans of the Expert Ryan Hughes flew to the 125cc and 250cc Pro-class wins at round five of the GFI Racing Winter Series South in Anza, California. Taking third in the moto was Carter, Dustin Lafave took fourth, and Nick Galpin finished fifth. In the second moto, Niemi and Anstett both suffered poor starts, leaving the first-place pOSition open to be taken by an unlikely star, Honda-mounted Dustin Lafave. Though Lafave looked likely to lose the lead on every lap. he stuck it out, holding off advances from Carter, Anstett and Niemi all at once. The foursome nat left the rest of the pack behind, and they were never more than a few bikelengths apart from each other. Lafave succeeded in scoring his class upset, taking the win with one of his best rides of the year. Carter took second, Garhett Carter (738), Jake Anstett (74) and J.J. Niemi (856) battled in the 125cc Expert ond 250cc Expert classes at Washington's Woodland MX Park. CYCLE NEWS • MARCH 16,2005 43
