AMA National Ice Race Championships Gladwin County Ice Carnival Mees, Pickett Charge to Championship Wins By BART NEWMAN ALBRIGHT SHORES, MI, JAN. 29-30 C old weather and ice don't sound like the right mix for racing. in most circles. But if you're an ice racer, it is heaven. The Turn One Distributing/Red Bull/Great Lakes Powersports/MCR Suspension/Stevens Cycle/Cummings Harley-Davidson/Ray C's/Michigan Power Sports/Bay Cycle/Nord ride-sponsored AMA National Ice Race Championships have found a home in Albright Shores. Michigan. for the last couple of years. Mark Cheza and Chris Liesen have built an ice-racing mecca at this Gladwin County facility. The banked half-mile track was impressive, as was the racing. With the growing popularity of the 4S0s. the 4S0cc KoldKutter class had 24 entries. which would have to be cut down to 14 finalists. The heats were won by Logan Meyers and Henry Wiles, but the field was loaded with talented riders such as GNCC Rookie of the Year Jared Mees, Taylor Knapp, Nicole Cheza and Scotty Parker. Steve Murray absconded with the holeshot, followed by Mees, Wiles. David Julian, Meyers, Cheza and Parker. Wiles got a great drive out of four and led the pack across the line, but he soon had his hands full with both Meyers and Mees. The track was getting a little bumpy, so line selection was critical. Wiles followed Meyers and Mees as the pack exited four. and he was getting a lot of pressure from Knapp, Cheza and Parker. Out front, Meyers and Mees were putting on a show, trading poSitions every lap. With two laps to go, Mees got a great drive off of two and got under Meyers going into three to take the lead for good. Meyers held tough for second. Knapp, Cheza and Parker Joe and Sherry Ferguson. They have opened their hearts beyond measure, sharing their time and commitment and their love of dirt-bike racing with others. Congratulations to all the SERA winners. and the involvement of every club that participated in 2004 is much appreciated. Check out Sera.dirtrider.net! FINAL RESULTS AA.: I. Stephen Reed (GG); 2.
