California Gold Cup Motocross Series Round 2: Perris Raceway PHOTO BY GREG ROBERTSON James, Huerta, Canada Conquer Perris By GREG ROBERTSON PERRIS, CA, JAN. 30 \ A fhat do Ricky james, Joshua Huerta and Jake Canada all Y V have in common? They were all triple-class winners at round two of the seventh annual FMF/Scott/Slamin Motor- sports/Race Signs-sponsored California Gold Cup Motocross Series. The series continues to grow, and this day's entries closed in on 900. which meant a full day of racing. James started things off with a couple of nearly flawless performances in the 12Scc Schoolboy DMsion One class for a pair of wins. Tye Hames overcame a bad start in mota one to finish in fifth, and then backed that up with a second-place showing in mota two for second overall, over Kevin Hurt (3-6) and joey Bitto (2-7). In the 125cc Intermediate Division One contest, James turned a pair of early leads into runaway victories on his CRF250. Anthony Charette piloted the lone KTM in the field up through traffic to a 2-3 tally and second overali. Freddy Sanchez (6-7) edged out Dana Dreier (9-5) for third overali. A pair of great starts helped James outrun his competition in both 2sOcc Four-Stroke Open Non-Pro Division One races. Tyler KaJisiak did his best to keep James in sight en route to a pair of runner-up finishes. A.J. Sjostrom (3-3), Travis Freistat (4-4) and Brian Bebeck (6 7) finished third through fifth, respectively. Honda-mounted Trent Pugmire dominated the opening 85cc (14-16) moto. Huerta battled with Taylor Roberts before breaking free for second at the checkers. Pugmire was a no-show for mota two, so Huerta sewed up the overall on a 2-1 showing. George Jeffers (4-2) came out on top of a points tie with Roberts (3-3) for second overall. Similarly, in Supermini Division Two racing, Pugmire won the first moto, over Huerta and Roberts. Pugmire's absence in mota two paved the way for Huerta's second overall win, on another 2-1 tally. Roberts (3-2) placed second, over Dean Wilson (4-3) and Tyler Sjoberg (5-4). Chris Piouffe nabbed the hoieshot in the first Bscc Open moto, but by lap two it was Huerta out front and pulling away. Roberts was again second, followed by Plouffe, Sjoberg and Wilson. Sjoberg grabbed the early second-moto lead, while Huerta was stuck mid pack. Huerta ran out of time in his attempt to run down Sjoberg, but his 1-2 effort was good enough for the class win. Sjoberg was runner-up overall, with Bryce Stewart (6-3) third. Nick Paluzzi, johnny jelderda and Canada argued over the Supermini Division One lead for most of the first mota, with Paluzzi prevailing. Paluzzi didn't contest moto two, setting the stage for a Canada-Jelderda showdown. Canada proved to be slightiy faster in moto two, going 3-1 to top Jelderda's 2-2 taly. Canada and jelderda butted heads again in both the 8scc (12-13) Division One and 85cc Open Division One classes, with Canada keeping his Yamaha just out of the reach of jelderda's RMBs for his second and third class wins of the day. Austin Tessitone (5-3) rounded out the top three in the 12-13 field, ahead of James Frigo (4-5) and jarred Spano (7-8), while Ivan Ramirez (7-3) was in Open racing, over Frigo (B-s).
