AMA District 37 Fun 4 Enduro Series Round I: UEA:s Not-So-Tuff-E-Nuff Enduro PHOTO BY GRUMPY Patience Rewards McGrath - 30 Years Later! By KTM 300 rider Andy Naylor had a surreal experience: waking up and discovering he was in the middle of an off-road event. Saturday's Poker Run drew 120 entries and 40 riders in the Kids' event. Recent rains left the ground damp and virtually dust-free. Only four seconds separated the winning times for the top two overall riders at the UEA Not-So-Tuff-E-Nuff Enduro. Jim McGrath has been racing District 37 off-road events for 30 years, and he was stunned to find out he had overalled his first event ever on his Powerhouse/Moose/IMS-backed KTM, by the slightest margin over runner-up Erik Mattson. "I still can't believe I won," said McGrath. "This is a dream come true for me. I think one of the biggest advantages for me was, I was on an early minute and did not have to deal with some of the bottlenecks that developed on the third loop." It wasn't a bottleneck that cost Mattson the overall win, but a rather large rock. "I made the mistake of following another rider after a check and realized we had run out of ribbon," recalled Mattson. "I had to really race to the next check and was going pretty good until I hit this uphill with a rock in the middle. There were a couple of guys stuck on the hill, so I started to head around them and got hung up on the rock. I couldn't get my bike off of it, and I had to hunker down, grab a hold of the bike, and use manpower to lift it up and over." By the time Mattson manhandled his FMF/Mo at Long Beach Motorsports/RG3-sponsored Honda back onto the course, he was running late for the next check. "Enduros are all about you against the clock, and I just didn't have anything left on the third loop after lifting the bike," Mattson stated. Both McGrath and Mattson agreed that UEA did a great job on the course layout. "This course was really fun, because it had a good mix of tight and technical terrain," McGrath noted. "Enduros are more of a use-your-head-type riding, and the three loops today had three different difficulty factors, which makes for a great ride!" The top overall finisher for riders required to run two loops also got up and close personal with a rock. B&M Cycles/3 Bros "I took a header about 25 miles into the first loop and knocked myself loopy," Naylor recalled with a laugh. "I couldn't remember where I was, and about 30 minutes later I remembered the crash. There's a couple of miles that are still pretty fuzzy for me!" By SHERI AMES BUCKEYE, AZ, JAN. 8 T Austin White showed his true colors, scoring a 1-2 finish at round one of the CMC Copperstote Classic Series at Arizona Cycle Park. 32 he new year came alive with the opening round of the 16th annual CMC Copperstate Classic Series, presented by Fox Racing. Arizona Cycle Park, widely known as the "virtually weatherproof track," hosted an excellent day of racing. Round one· sponsored by Shift, The Pit Enterprise, AEO Powersports, Gordy's Bicycles, Apache Motorsports, Meyer Racing, Andrews Motorsport5 and Bent Clothing - was a raging inferno of racers, including Austin White, Taylor Robert. Douglas French came in second with 3-1 finishes. Robert maneuvered his Fox Racing/The Pit Enterprise Honda to I-I scores for the overalls in the 85« Open and 85« (14-16) classes. This guy was just flying! The awesome track conditions so prime, they even enticed Michael Hall [0 come out to Arizona. Hall dominated in the Supermini and 85« (12-13) classes, scoring I-I finishes in each. Ames, on his RaceTechlZLT/Dragon-backed Cobra, placed first in the first Pee Wee (7-8) moto, but Thunder Ralston was not about to let that happen again in moca two. Ralston had his PVK KTM on the move. The boys banged bars and rubbed tires, with Ralston emerging victorious. However, with his 1-2 tally, Ames hung on to the overall win. Pro Circuit/Universal-backed Kawasaki jockey Higgins dominated the 12S« and 250« Intermediate classes. It was a clean sweep for Higgins, who went I-I all day.
