CMC Golden State Nationals South Round 2: I-S MX McCool Drives 'em Crazy Bv JOHN BETHEA GORMAN, CA, JAN. 16 A couple of old lions (orgot their age and I""'\,.,ound up teaching some of the youthful tigers that spirited races aren't just for the younger set, as the CMC st>ged round two of the FMF Golden State Nationals South at 1-5 MX Veterans Willie Surratt and Chris Young, both Pro riders as teens two decades ago, locked homs in a terrific dice for the tead in the second Vet (Over 30) Pro moto. The pair were side by side (or more than two laps. Young (who raced under the nickname "Chipmunk" in his early career before changing it to "Youngster" and, later, "Oldster") was aced by Surratt. a multiple-class minibike champion from the '70s, in their first encounter. However, a great start in the second stanza saw Chris sailing in the lead before making a miscue on a jump on his Shoei/Gaeme Suzuki. "He [Surratt] got a taste of it [the lead] and came after me," Young grinned later. "We battled comer to corner, but those 4505 are so fast compared to my two-stroke 2S0, and he kept coming." Once Surratt got by late in the race, he driven it yet." But he did drive his foes crazy, scOfing wins in the 60cc (9-11), 60cc Open and BOcc (7-11) classes. He also entered the BOcc Open contest, but the older boys held him back to sixth aboard his Fly Racing/PVK/Spy/Race Tech Kawasaki. Leading those older boys was Kyle Kessinger, the 13-year-old O'NeaVWisecoNarner/Nonh Kern Motorsports Yamaha rider from Bakersfield, California, who bagged wins in the BOcc Open and BOcc (12-13) classes. The top BOcc (14-16) rider was Brad Nauditt, who flies all the way from Colbert, Washington, to these races on the weekends. Nauditt also recorded thirds in the 80ce Open and Supermini events. The biggest scare of the weekend came not on the track but in the 125cc Junior gallery. While Bruce Rutherford of Murrieta, California, was outpacing the field aboard his Yamaha en route to the overall win, his father, Bruce Sr., got overly excited and his pacemaker began to malfunction, giving himself and the trackside paramedics concern. When his son won, everything calmed down. Not so calm was Jarred Browne, who rode his West Coast/No Fear/Bill's Pipes/American Suzuki to the Schoolboy and 125cc Intermediate eked out the best race of the day aboard his wins before jumping the start of the second MTNMBI Honda. 250cc Intermediate molO, which led to a DQ, spoiling his attempt at a third lJiumph. eN Leading the cubs with sheer energy was Jeremy McCool, the 1 I-year-old from 29 Palms. California. Unlike most of his fellow pre-teens, McCool has already scored academically, having earned a college scholarship. and he also has a set of wheels already waiting for him when he gets old enough to drive. "Yeah, I've got a cherried-out '63 Cadillac my dad bought (or me parked in our front yard," grinned the long-haired blond. "I haven't Michael Porter (Yam); 3. Anthony Defazio (SUI); ... Landowner Dan Burch can take a box blade around a large percentage of the track and smooth it out prior to each event, leaving only a few sections of whoops. However, after TaRO's limited practice on Saturday, those whoops started to develop again in the soft sand. If it hasn't rained recently, this track can deliver the beating of a lifetime. After the Amateurs raced three laps in the morning and the Minis and Ladies took two laps on a shortened course, the Pros had their turn on the track. SMS Racing/Motion Cycle Sports/Thor rider Dwain Carter said it was "Brutal!" At 31 years old, Carter is new to this type of racing. He has spent all his time at the motocross track, and until TaRO, he had never competed in off-road events. "'t'S taking some time to get the bike set up for this type of racing," Carter said. "I broke a chain at the opener, because I didn't know about using an a-ring. It's that type of stuff I've had to learn, and some of it I've had to learn the hard way. "1 had a pretty good stan," Carter continued. "and found myself behind Clay Hoenshell and my friend David Widmer. Widmer made a move to pass Hoenshell, but Hoenshell passed him back quickly. Widmer let me by, like, 'You try it!' That's when Hoenshell put a little space on us all! I stalled on the second lap. and it took about six kicks to get it started. I could hear [Steve] Leivan coming, but I was able to get it going again [0 keep him Dwain Carter, a relative newcomer to off-road racing, won overall at the fifth round of TORO action in Bonita, Texas.
