course. Cozzens, in second, showed pretty decent speed himself as he opened up his own sizable lead on third. Elliott roared home in the comfort zone, while Cozzens demolished everyone else. Gould held off Austin Warren and Schlei for third. Moto two featured another Elliott holeshot, as he led Cozzens and Connor Strait out into battle. Once again, no one could match Elliott's pace, and no one else could keep up with Cozzens, in second. Another monster win netted Elliott the overall 6Scc (7-9) crown, while Cozzens' solid second earned Chaisson second overall. Warren's consistency edged Schlei and Strait for the final podium spot. If people get out of their motorhomes and off of their lawn chairs and come up to the fence to watch a motocross race, chances are it's one of the Pro contests. They rarely disappoint. Saturday's 250cc Pro race had its share of wild and crazy racing. Jesse Hodges, in his Pro debut, shot off the line to lead Adam Luhrs and Zac Humphries when the action started. Chad Jorgensen made the first big push, clawing his way up into second. Humphries retaliated, running Jorgensen high up into a berm to regain second. Hodges, meanwhile, stayed out in front, but he was beginning to get major pressure from Humphries. Jorgensen got right back on track and passed Humphries, only to get repassed - a couple of times. Their private war allowed Hodges to open up some daylight and win the first half going away. Jorgensen made a final pass to nip Humphries for second, while Luhrs grabbed fourth. Humphries smoked the field to start moto two. Hodges and Jeff Walton gave chase. Humphries led almost the whole first lap, but then he got out of shape just before the finishline tabletop. He shot off the track and did a "one-and-one-half gainer" into the biggest mud puddle in the entire area. Nobody could stop laughing (once everybody realized he hadn't drowned), but Humphries' watery detour washed him out for the moto. Walton took over the lead, and Hodges and Luhrs duked it out. Walton, now with a big lead, was a shoo-in until he wiped out in a corner. Luhrs, having parked Hodges a little earlier, inherited the lead and took the win. Hodges battled back for second, which let him edge Luhrs for the overall 250cc Pro title. Jorgensen led Walton in (KTM); 3. Tyler Jones (KTM); 4. Spencer Lee (KTM); S. Pete Bischoff (KTM). Miller and Jones slipped off the pace, while a determined Hammonds tried to reel in the leader. Jackson made no mistakes and reached the checkers first. John Paul Tortorigi was fifth on his KTM. The turnout for the Open D class required two waves of riders on the starting line. In the heat race, KX-mounted Adam Bush escaped a first-turn pileup that claimed three machines. Terry Roberts and Justin Morris followed. Morris pushed his Kawasaki forward and nipped Bush at the finish for the win. Valley Grand, Alabama's David Hulsey turned in a strong ride and brought his 1979 YZ2S0 in fifth. While Kawboys Morris and Bush disappeared en route to a one-two finish in the main, Hulsey was making waves aboard his vintage machine. With Jacob Thomas holding down third, Hulsey moved into fifth at the halfway point; next, he motored past Roberts' Honda on the whooped-out front straight for fourth. Hulsey then reeled in Thomas and drew even in several turns with aggressive, insidegroove pass attempts. Thomas was able to keep his pOSition by a slim two-bikelength margin. Roberts was fifth. Tyson Miller didn't get a top finish in the Preteen heat, but he was ready for the main. He got a nice jump off the start and led Kasey Jones and David Blackerby. The action heated ahead of Blackerby's RM. Patrick Lumpkin raced to a fourthplace finish in the 65cc (7-9) class at round two of the Alabama Arenacross Series. RESULTS so E-L: I. The final results of the Youth/Schoolboy Grand-Opening Race Begins with a Bangl By Roy JENKINS BATON ROUGE, LA, JAN. 2 otocross in Louisiana began the New Year with a bang - literally - as the much-anticipated opening of River's Edge Motocross set off fireworks over the nearby Mississippi River on New Years' Day. The next day, fans were treated to an AMA-sanctioned race, complete with the resurgence of old rivalries and surging new talent on one of the most well-lit, interesting track layouts in the Gulf area. The first race exploded with the Mitch Gourney/Jeremy Domingue rivalry. You could feel their energy as they slammed the berms, M down in the switchback section, allowing his nemesis to get away clean; by the time he got up, McCarra. Arceneaux, Barrios and Kirby Dodd had all gotten by. Gourney went on to take the victory, followed by McCarra, Arceneaux, Domingue and Barrios. In the second moto, Domingue grabbed the lead and held on for two laps, while Gourney pressured him from behind. In third, McCarra got some nags caught in his bike and lost time getting rid of them. Magic Mitch got to the checkers first, with Domingue right on his tail. Arceneaux took third and McCarra was fourth, and that's the way the overall went as well. Nick Phillips got the early lead in the 12Scc blitzed the whoops and whipped their 80s Money class on his Bardwell Yamaha 250F, in around in the stratosphere.
