RESULTS Blake Kennedy sails aver the finish-line step-dawn in the 250cc Maney class at the first motocross event of the new year at River's Edge Motocross Track in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Murphy, Phillips and the rest of the pack to go by. Manuel jumped back up to continue the I Slap race from last place. Once he caught up with the pack, he used alternate lines to pick off riders. Manuel did the deed on the back-straight tabletop with a look-back to say good-bye. In the second moto, Manuel took the lead from Phillips halfway through the first lap, followed by Corey Romero and Murphy. That order held all the way to the finish line. In the Open Money class, Chase Romero jumped out to an early lead, followed by fellow Honda 4S0F rider Blake Kennedy, Yamaha 4S0F rider Trent Cannon, Manuel, and Murphy, on the Champion Cycles 2S0cc KTM. Early leader Romero took two rare soil samples and reentered the race in sixth place. Meanwhile, Kennedy took the lead for good, setting a strong, steady pace. Cannon was a smooth third. Romero sneaked up on Cannon late in the race to take second, but Kennedy's lead was enough to win the mota. Romero won the second mota by 12 seconds over Kennedy, with Cannon third. 50 (4.6): I. Mark Wadlington (29) leads the 28-35 Intermediate class through the ruts at round one of the Vet X Winter Series, held at Racetown 395 MX Park. Carolina Winter Series Round 3: Sandhills Motorsports Park Vet X Winter Series Round I: Racetown 395 MX Park Smith, Hayes Vet X Kickstarts the New Year Dice It Up for By ADELANTO, CA, JAN. 2 the New Year STEVE EMTER he sophomore year of Vet X kicked off with round one of the Winter Series at Racetown 395 MX. After a week of rain and damp weather. the track crews worked hard on the track preparation and delivered very good yet soft conditions that challenged the California riders with an uncharacteristically soft, rutted track. With Suzuki contingency and series championships on the minds of the riders, there was plenty of exciting racing. When the gate dropped for the Open Pro race, Suzuki-mounted Willy Musgrave pulled the holeshot. followed closely by a pack of Pro and Expert riders. As they came around for the second lap, David McCown had taken the lead from Musgrave. With six more laps to go, Musgrave was on the chase, while Yamaha rider Jimmy Hazel was working his way up to third and within striking distance of the riders in front of him. On lap seven, Hazel got by both riders in front of him to steal the lead and the mota win, with McCown and Musgrave following behind. Moto two brought about even more action. Musgrave took the lead, followed by Hazel. For the first two laps, a battle appeared to be shaping up, but on lap three, Hazel dropped out, giving second place to McCown. Mota two finished with Musgrave taking the win, McCown placing second, and third going to Jason Larson. T 36 The overall went to Musgrave (3-1), with McCown (2-2) in second and Larson (4-3) taking third. The 28-35 Intermediate class faced a track deeply rutted from the previous motos, and it took its toll on the riders. Yamaha rider Mark Wadlington got a jump off the gate and built a very quick lead until the ruts quickly claimed their first victim and he went down in the third corner, giving the lead to Bret Milan. On lap two, Honda-mounted Jonathan Rhodes took the lead away from Milan, and he eventually scored the moto win. with Milan in second and Yamaha rider Joe Prais quietly taking the third spot. Moto 2 again provided plenty of action, and. being the last moto of the day, it proved a big challenge for the riders just to finish all seven laps. Milan was the rider who had the tenaCity to survive the challenge, taking the lead on lap one and never giving it up, taking the overall win with his 2-1 finishes. Mota-one winner Rhodes came in second to take second overall with a 1-2 tally, and Wadlington overcame his first·moto troubles to finish third for the final podium spot. RESULTS MINI BEG: I. By GREG SUMNER CHESTERFIELD, SC, JAN. 2 and hills hosted the third round of the Carolina Winter Series, presented by Champion Cycle Sales. The promoters made round three a double-points race to celebrate 25 years of racing at Sand hills. It was a hot day for January 2. but the competition was even hotter, as 349 riders showed up, prepared to battle! When the gate dropped for the 23-rider combined Supermini and 85cc (9-13) contest, Honda rider William Wenk grabbed the holeshot. but Les Smith quickly took over the lead in the whoops on lap one. Smith dominated the remainder of the mota. Wenk had his hands full trying to keep Jacob Hayes back in third. On lap three, Hayes launched his KTM into second over the final double before the finish. Wenk charged back past Hayes through the whoops. In the following turn, Wenk spun out, and Hayes was gone in flash. At the line, it was Smith, Hayes, Jared Lautzenheiser, Seth Quesinberry and Wenk. In mota two, Smith took the point and checked out for a wire-to-wire win. Behind him. Wenk and Hayes renewed their duel. After four laps, Hayes edged out Wenk by a bikelength over the finish tabletop. Lautzenheiser and Quesinberry rounded out the top five. S Smith (I-I) won the Supermini overall. Hayes (2-2) was actually the overall winner for the ascc (9-13) class, with a I-I tally. Wenk (3·2) was second in the Superminis. with Lautzenheiser (2-3) third and Dalton Harper and Aleck Forte rounding out the top five. In the ascc (9-13) class, Quesinberry (2-2) earned second, followed by Brand on Rowell, Tyler Semino and Bryce Cates. Smith also swept both motos of the 85cc (14-1 S) contest, while Hayes swept both ascc (7-1 I) motos - a perfect day for both riders. One of the best races of the day was the Women's contest. Holly Armistead got the holeshot, followed by Vicki Tunali, Chasity Man and the rest of the field of eight riders. Man made the move on Tunali to take second through the whoops on lap one. A lap later, Armistead and Man were battling bar to bar. Man took the lead over a double. but Armistead came back. and the two swapped positions back and forth for three Iaps until Man crashed hard when she cased a double! Kayla Dayton took over second, with Tunali third and Jenna Williamson fourth. Man got up to finish fifth. In moto two. Armistead got the holeshot again, with Man right there. Man made her pass on the back-side double on the first lap, just like in mota one. Armistead charged but couldn't make a pass stick. Man won the mota by a half a bikelength ahead of Armistead. Dayton was third, with Williamson fourth and Stephanie Robinette fifth. Armistead won the overall with her 1-2 punch. Dayton (2-3) earned second, Man (S-I) got third, the consistent Williamson was fourth, and Tunali (3-6) was fifth.
