start, when Patterson flashed into lead. From that point on, the two swapped the point position until Vermilyea finished in first place in the 200cc B class (and 25th overall), while Patterson gOt second. "He got by me on the third lap," said Patterson. "We were neck and neck. so I tried to push him into making a mistake. But he was stiff and wouldn't budge." As far as the dream vacation goes, Vermilyea's got big plans. He's familiar with the joy of giving. because that vacation would be going under the Christmas tree as a present for someone special. By JIM WRIGHT EVERETT, WA, DEC, 18 ne might think that after 30 years of promoting ice racing. it would be old hat for Gary Densford, but every event is a new adven· ture. and he adds to each race to them better and better. At the season opener, the fans were on their feet when the winningest rider in the history of speedway indoor ice racing. Charley "The Edge" Venegas. was introduced. In the first heat, Robbie Sauer grabbed the first 10 points. Paul Hitchcock won heat two, Sean O Billenstein picked up five points for second, and Guy Jessop took third. The stylish Charlie Cooley won heat three. Bill Hermant was second, followed by Robert "The Ice Man" Curry and Joe Hovanic. In heat four, Ronnie Kemp got the crowd going when he stole the holes hot ahead of obvious crowd favorite Venegas. What a roar! On lap three, the crowd got their way when Venegas took the lead. Kemp had to settle for second. James Mann picked up three points for third. The second round of heats saw three new heat winners: Kemp (who held off the famous Chorlie Venegos (left) leads Ronnie Kemp and Chorlie Cooley at round one of the World Championship Ice Racing Series, held in Everett, Washington. "Mountain Man," John Grant), Mann, and Curry. After the last-chance qualifier, three men would transfer to the main and four would load up to go home. Mann made up his mind he would go to the main. and he did. Curry battled hard with Robbie Sauer, and when the blackand-white came out, Curry was second and Sauer picked up the last transfer spot. When the boys hit the ice for the six· lap main-event showdown. the crowd was on its feet. Would the winner be Curry, who had won the last heat and the LCQ? Or maybe "Mr. Focus," Kemp? Or "Never Lift" Cooley? When the ribbon went up. six riders engaged in battle. Venegas led the pack coming out of turn two. Hot on his tail was Cooley, swapping paint with Mann. Though Mann tried inside and outside, Cooley had it twisted to the stops. For six laps, Venegas gave the fans what they came for, and he started off the season with another big win. Second-place honors went to Cooley. Mann rounded out the podium with a strong third, followed by Kemp in fourth, Curry in fifth and Sauer in sixth. Another exciting ICE race was in the books, but this is a 12·race series, and it will be eXciting to follow this year's ICE championship. Grand national number 10. Dan Stanley, started off the new Mad Dog flat-track class with a big win in the main event. J. Annen scored second. Densford produced an exciting season opener. This year's series will visit venues in Canada, Minnesota, Colorado and Las Vegas, to name just a few. Come join the fun! RESULTS HEAT I: t. Robbie Sauer; 1. Eddie Martinez; J. Tyler Hansen. Texas Offroad Racing Organization Round 4: Tate Ronch Cooksey Cookin'in Crafton! By JENNIFER WEBB CRAnON, TX, DEC. 18-19 T he Tate Ranch in Crafton, Texas, was the site of TORO's fourth round. Owner/promoter Mark Tate put in extra effort to make the track more technical than in years past, adding several miles of new trail. Tate also pro· vided additional funds to the Pro purse as a thank-you to the riders for coming out the weekend before Christmas to support his race. Participants were very appreciative of his hard work and the added bonus. The Over 45 A class saw a battle being waged between Plano Honda rider Andrew Cooksey and Doug Taft. Cooksey, a member of the TSCEC Enduro Circuit Hall of Fame, has come out of retirement to enjoy racing again with his son and to compete for a championship of his own. Doug Taft, owner of Greenville Suzuki, is making it difficult for him. "Trey Jorski, who is a Pro MXer from the '70s. Doug and I had a great race going!" Cooksey said. "We exchanged leads several times during the first couple laps. In the past. I was able to put a bit of time on Doug; not this one!" "I broke my kickstarter off at the start," Taft said, "but the bike fired and I played catch-up. I was able to keep it running the entire race, so it wasn't too big a deal. I'm looking forward to the next round!" The two battled a little less than a minute apart for five solid laps. Taft had to pit; Cooksey did not. When Cooksey came screaming down the last straight to the finish, he had a 58second gap on Taft for the win! In Pro action, Clay Hoenshell took the holeshot. with Robert Lambert and Caleb Ramsay right on him. "I got by Hoenshell pretty quick," Honda KTM West/DevollGaerne rider Robert Lambert said, "and led through the end of lap two until I Bert Reynolds topped the 2S0cc A class at round four of TORO action in Crafton, Texas. got a front flat. I stayed close to Hoenshell the rest of the race until he ran out of gas on the last lap. and I was able to take the lead and hold off [Steve] Leivan for the win!" "Just past the halfway point of the final lap, Hoenshell ran out of gas, and I moved into second," SCR Yamaha/Answer/Dunlop backed Leivan commented. "Lambert held it together, and I never got dose enough to make anything happen. He ended up getting me by two seconds!" SMS Racing's Christopher Storrie won the Mini C class for the first time this season, which moved him to third place in the standings. Gainesville Powersporrs-supported Danny Cooksey, Andrew's son, took his first win in and is now leading the Mini B class. Cutter Holloway moved into first overall in the Over 30 C class with his first win in that class. Joshua Woessner (in the 200cc C class). Devon Coetzer (in the 250cc B class) and Rick Dinwiddie (in the Over 45 C class) all documented their first wins of the season, moving each of them to second overall in his respective class.
