Too Much Fun La Playa Motocross Series Final Round: San Fernanda Motocross Park the score sheets. Lobreno was solid in second, having done his best to keep pace with Glass, which opened up a good cushion over Hodges and Allen, who were waging war for the third pOSition. Glass took the checkered flag with a big lead in hand, and Lobretto was second with a good lead over Hodges, who held off everything that Allen threw at him. Moto two was another Glass runaway, as the Hudsonville, Michigan, rider was riding ...well, as smooth as glass. Lobretto was second; he is running well these days, making good use of the AMA District 14 Indoor MX Series. In third place was Cain, who was running close to the front after a bener start. The rest of the pack was trying to straighten itself out while Glass was motoring away. The running order held until the checkered flag flew, as Glass took another easy win, as well as the overall. Lobreno was second again with a good effort. Cain bettered his score by [wo positions to take Casas in the Housel By RICH TRUCHINSKI ROSARITO BEACH, BC, MEXICO, DEC. 4 D iego Munguia wrapped up another win and second in the championship in the Pee Wee class at the last round of the Too Much Fun La Playa Motocross Series, with Gustavo De La Rosa taking second and Giovanni Martini holding on for a third. In the most exciting battle of the day, there was a runaway winner and a bar-banging race for second. In the first and only moto (due to rain), KTM pilot Munguia led from the start, followed by Kawasaki rider Eduardo Contreras, Honda rider De La Rosa. Suzuki rider Martini, and Christian Melendez. Throughout the moto, while Munguia pulled out a sizable lead, the other four swapped positions back and forth. The race for second was nose to tail for the whole mota. At one point, Martini got around De La Rosa for third. Then, on the last lap, Contreras went down in the right-hand sand corner. Martinis took advantage, but De La Rosa could smell second - if he could get close enough to make a move. Then seasoned veteran De La Rosa squared off the last corner to move underneath Martini for the pass and take second by a wheel's length. The top three were Munguia, De La Rosa and Martini, and Melendez and Rodolfo Sevilla Jr. rounded out the top five. In the I 25cc Pro class, a banle was heating up for the class championship between rivals Eric Casas and Carlos Casas. Coming into the last round of this four-round series, these two riders had the best chance at a series championship. In the first moto, Eric (the elder Casas) took the holeshot and never looked back. Carlos kept Eric honest briefly but was unable to close the increasing gap during the entire mota. Eric looked calm, cool and collected and rode to the checkered flag without incident. In the second moto, Carlos wanted another shot at Eric. Though all the other motos had been canceled due to rain, the promoters found it necessary to hold one last mota: The 125cc and 250cc Pros were combined into one mota, and they lined up for the final moto of the day. Eric took the lead right from the get-go, but with the 2S0cc riders in the mix, it made things interesting. Most goggles were tossed away after the first-corner "lake" had been navigated. In the heated 125cc class, Eric moved through the pack and was running second overall and first in class. The mud was a true test for some of the riders who didn't fare too well after throwing their rain-soaked rides to the ground. Eric continued with a comfortable lead in the I25cc class. As the riders splashed their way to the checkers, Eric held steady all the way to the end and took the 12Scc Pro win, ahead of Carlos and juan Sevilla. It was later determined that Carlos had cut the track: he was penalized and dropped to third place. Eric was the 125cc Pro champion, with juan second and Carlos third. D andy Woodring continued his winning ways I"'at Zeeland Indoor MX - on a double-points stop on the AMA District 14 Indoor MX Series, no less - getting wins in both the I 25cc A and 250cc A classes at the series' second stop at the largest indoor motocross facility in Michigan. With Grant Moreland and Woodring both on the gate for the first 125cc A moto, the trackside seating was packed, because everyone in attendance knew these two cats really fly. Moreland and Woodring went down the front straight side by side, but Moreland held the inside line and the advantage going into turn one. Moreland held that advantage for the entire moto, and while Woodring kept Moreland honest, there was never a real challenge after the first lap. In moto two, Moreland was once again the first guy into turn one, but a slight miscue was all it took for Woodring to get by and move out front. With the lead in hand, Woodring clicked off a moto's worth of mistake-free, fast laps and never let Moreland have an opening to repeat his first-moto win. The second~moto win gave Woodring the overall, to boot. Kyle Glass won both 125cc B motos in grand fashion. He knows the ZMX track like the back of his hand, which really helps with his SO SHAFT: I. Glass has been busy all winter long, burning up the tracks throughout the Midwest, and he is a front-runner in several classes in the AMA Regional Arenacross Series. In mota one, Glass was quick on the thronle and pulled Josh Lobrelto, Kip Hodges, Chris Allen and Levi Cain through turn one. With the lead and his intimate knowledge of the ZMX track, Glass was floating, building up a commanding lead by the time lap two was on z < ~ w Z ti: ;3 ~ ~ a. ith eight to 10 inches of snow and ice on the ground and temperatures in the teens, the A 80cc class left the line with their tires spinning, looking for some traction. Garrison Gragg, riding for Mach I Motorsports in Vallejo, California, took the holeshot, followed by Yamaha rider jonathan Godman and KTMmounted Troy Amacker. Godman soon moved into the lead on the I I-mile course, followed by Gragg and Amacker. Gragg and Godman stayed together, swapping places and pulling away from the pack. Godman took the lead on the icy roads; Gragg made up time in the technical sections. Godman was feeling some pressure at the end of lap two. "I hit the checkpoint at the pit ahead of Garrison," Godman recounted. "I stopped to gas; he passed me and left about I 00 feet ahead of me. The thought of now trying to catch him was not my favorite situation, but I caught him on the road. I felt pretty good on the roads." Showing who's king in the snow, 33 miles later Godman wrapped up the last race of the year with his first class win and overall win for 2004. Gragg was second by 12 seconds, and just over eight minutes later, Troy Amacker filled the podium with third. The top three A 80cc champions in the District 36 series are Gragg, jonathan Davis and Godman. Adam Johnson took the holes hot off the A 50cc line, followed by Brett Sage and Bruno Moreda. johnson spun out on the first lap. It was a challenge just to get going on the ice and snow, and though johnson made up time toward the end of the race, it wasn't enough to get on the podium. Sage took the advantage, never went down, and held the lead for the rest of the race to finish first. In a close points race, Sage came into the last race of the series ranked fourth for the year, but his win gave him second for the year. Sierra Hunewell was another of the top contenders for year-end points; she came up through the ranks and pulled second in Nevada. Chad Broughton took third. The top three A SOcc champions in the District 36 series are Broughton, Sage and Hunewell. Like most riders present, the top girl rider, Kacy Martinez, struggled on the ice and snow. She went down hard twice, and after watching one of the top A 80cc riders, joey Pascarella, go down hard, she stopped while he was assisted by B 80cc rider Michael Bettencourt. "I tried to mostly cruise after that," she said, but cruising proved to be just good enough, as Martinez took the win. "My face and fingers were completely numb," she added. Finishing off the top three podium positions were Kasie Creson and Kristin Cosby. The top three B Girls for 2004 in the District 36 series are Martinez, Creson and Brooke Hodges. RESULTS A SO: I.
