Indeed, at the end of two laps,
Campbell had I0 minutes over the

charged to the finish without incident,
unlike many of the other teams' bikes.
Childress reported hitting the midway
point with a four-minute lead in the FourStroke Pro class, good for second overall,
behind the Campbell/Hengeveld XR.

Best in the Desert's Silver State Series
dominated the Golden West Cycle Parker 250 to kick off the 2005 season. The
Precision Concepts/Dunlop/Honda Pro
Oils XR650R-mounted duo completed
the three-lap, 232-mile race in 4 hours,
I0 minutes and 7 seconds.
But perhaps the main topic of the day
was the perfect racing conditions. The
rains that had inundated Southern
California (making a mess of the supercross at Anaheim) provided the ideal
amount of water in the Arizona desert,
which made for a rare dust-free day in the
desert.
"Riding a desert race when everything's wet and loamy and you've got
traction everywhere is just awesome,"
Hengeveld said.
Campbell agreed.
"We don't get to race like that all the
time, more like once every I0 years,"
Cambell said. "It's absolutely perfect. You
couldn't ask for a better mix. It made it
easy to pass the lappers, the four-wheelers and stuff, and our Precision Conceptsprepped bike just worked so good. We
had the advantage today, for sure."
Hengeveld was second off the line and
chased early leader Kendall Norman -
who was teamed with Robby
Bell on a second American
Honda entry - for about 30
miles until Norman cartwheeled the bike, incurring
major bike damage and suffering enough personal injury to
send him to the hospital for
treatment, leaving Bell to ride
the rest of the race in order to
salvage some points. Bell,
however, would also crash
heavily near the end of the
race, though he was able to

losing most of the lubricant and forcing a
