PHOTO BY KAREN GOULD/CHECKEREDFLAGPHOTOS.COM Chowchilla Barn Burner Series Final Round: Chowchilla Fairgrounds Chandler the Handler By KAREN GOULD CHOWCHILLA, CA, DEC. 18 T he corrals were full for the final race of the 2004 Chowchilla Barn Burner Series. With more than I 15 riders competing in this event racing couldn't have been any better. The track was tacky - perfect for these riders to show their best skill and talent. Aboard the Rod Lake-sponsored Vamaha SOO tuned by Robert Boten, Doug Chandler put on a show for everyone. The other star of this show was Chris Canepa. aboard an Engines Only-sponsored Honda 450. Canepa got the Open A holes hot and led the 10-rider pack for the first seven laps. Right on Canepa's back wheel, Chandler turned up the heat with each lap. On the eighth and final circle around the track, Chandler squeezed under Canepa to take this win. In the Open Money race, Canepa was again first out of the starting gate. and he and Chandler swapped the front position back and forth for the first couple of laps. Once Chandler got in front to stay, he was shown no mercy by Canepa, who stayed right on his back wheel, awaiting the opportunity to get past him. Chandler didn't give Canepa that chance and took home the money. KLH Racing Presents-sponsored Stevie Bonsey finished both of these races in third. Although he finished fourth in this week's Vet A event, Clay Chambers took home the number-one 2004 District 3S black plate, and Mark Biscardi took home the Chowchilla Barn as he made a last-turn pass for the lead and went on to take the checkers just a bikelength ahead of Becvar. On the day, Becvar (2-2) and Jump (6-3) rounded out the top three overall. In 60cc Novice action, Cal Johnson topped the field with a pair of wins. Both Justin Brown and Reno Evans proved a handful of competition for Johnson. but both times out, Johnson came from behind to take the wins. Evans' solid 3-2 score locked up the two Spot overall on the day. while J.D. Elliot ended up with the third spot overall after a 4-3 outing. A IO-rider field of 60cc Open riders saw Johnson and Brown swap mota wins. Johnson JeHrey Carothers was the 60cc Beginner winner at the secand round of the AMP Super Gold Cup Octoberfest Series. 38 Burner Series high-point trophy in this class. On this night, Steve Hall took the win, followed by Biscardi and Greg Sorderer. Biscardi also took home the Over 40 highpoint trophy, while Mike Paulsen was awarded the number-one black plate for the class. Briar Bauman claimed victory in the a5cc A event, making a spectacular show of starting from the cheaters' box. Brandon Bernardeau, who pulled a roller on the restart, going around the pack on the outside from the back row, finished second. Bauman earned the District 35 2004 black plate in this dass. Michael Avila, aboard Petz TOWing's motorcycle, finished third and earned the number-two black plate. Fred Bennett, who had a horrid crash last week, walked away with the Vintage A event, followed by Brad Spencer Sr. and Johnny Larson. Larson earned both the Chowchilla Barn Burner Series high point and the District 35 number-one black plate in this class. Following the races, a wonderful awards ceremony was held to honor the winners of the first black plates awarded in District 35 in more than 25 years, and the Chowchilla Barn Burner high-point series. Awards were also given to the track's most improved riders, Joshua Pen and Weasel Hickman. The Diaz Motorsports Chowchilla Barn Burner Series is now known as the best and most fun short track in California, draWing many of the local Pro riders. The new I I-race 200S high-point series under the roof begins January 8. eN put in the most consistent performance, as his 2-1 efforts sealed the deal. Evans had a pair of good rides and posted a 3-2 effort for the second spot on the day. Brown went down in mota two but mustered up a 1-5 talty to round out the top three on the day. Mega Cup Series Tucker-Rocky Mid-Atlantic Winter Motocross Series Round 13/3: Southfork MX Everett, Day Dispute at Disputantal By GREG SUMNER DISPUTANTA, VA, NOV. 28 "'The weekend after Thanksgiving. Southfork I MX hosted the final round of the Extreme Factory Mega Cup Series - just to give everyone a chance to work off all that turkey! The promoters held a draWing for a 2004 CRFSO, and the winner was 65cc rider Edward Jones from Linthicum, Maryland, who had an early Merry Christmas' As the 125cc A riders left the gate, Randall Everett grabbed the holeshot, but a charging Aaron Day quickly took the lead before the second turn. Bumpsticks/Scott/Answer-backed Suzuki rider Day started to pull away. Then, in the second of three sets of whoops, Day went down. Factory Effex/MFI/Dunlop/Shift-backed Kawasaki jockey Everett retook the lead. Rodney Horrocks and Chris Welch also passed Day, who rejoined the race in fourth before Ryan Price could get by. On the second lap, Day retook third from Welch in the third set of whoops. Valley Suzuki/FMF/Empire Graphix rider Horrocks kept Everett honest but couldn't make a pass stick. Everett beat Horrocks by a bikelength. Day, Welch and Price rounded out the top five.
