Blix had gonen his bell rung and was a DNS for the second moto. Nearing took the initial lead. Lee Evans. who had stalled on the gate in the first moto, knifed through the pack and ended up right on Nearing's rear fender as they went over the Ski Jump double. When the Intermediates all arrived, they filed it on the right, except for Crouch - but he landed short and swapped, and another bell sounded. Cumbo and Joe Sterns were trading places at each turn, both of them wanting to catch Evans. Cumbo would pass Sterns, but Sterns would come right back past at the next turn. Finally Cumbo made the third pass stick and then motored off to catch Evans, while Sterns was holding off Martin. Up front, Nearing and Evans would do the double, and Cumbo would have to catch back up again. However, Evans had had a poor firstmoto finish, so Cumbo decided to just stay right where he was - and took the overall Over 45 Intermediate win. Nearing won the Expert portion. After the race, Stems approached Cumbo in the pits. "Couldn't you race any closer than that?" Sterns asked. "But we never hit," Cumbo replied, "and I had a blast!" RESULTS BEG: I. Andy Laviolette: 2. Dragoon Creek MX Track A First for Noel Makes for a Happy Holladay By DAWN SIlZ LYNDON, KS, NOV. 7 This race was just like all the others this year, I though some of the classes are getting smaller because of the weather. However, the Pee Wee class was still the same - and one of the largest classes of the day. KTM rider Cole Cloughley had the race of his life. In the first moto, Cloughley rode as hard as he could. but KTM rider Josh Williams just would not let Cloughley get around. C/oughley pushed hard, trying to get around Williams, knowing all the time that if he made a mistake, Lem rider Devon Temmen was right behind him, just waiting to get by. All three boys rode as hard and fast as they could, but when the checkered flag dropped, Williams was still ahead, with Cloughley and then Temmen behind him. The second moto started out the same as the first, but then Williams made that little anticipated mistake, and C10ughley and Temmen both made their move. Once Cloughley was ahead, he was not about to let anyone pass him; he charged hard, knowing that Temmen and Williams were right behind him. Never giving up. Cloughley led the three around the track all the way to the checkered flag. The Women's class featured two cousins battling for the win. Honda rider Noel Holladay and Honda rider Allie Souza battled it out for first and second. Holladay charged hard and put a lead on Souza, but she knew if she made any 80 mistake, Souza might be able to get by. So she did everything she could do to not let that happen. When the checkered nag dropped, Holladay was still ahead of Souza. In the second mota, Holladay once again put a lead on Souza - until she Noel crashed on the front section of the track, taking out a bale of hay and flipping herself upside down. She jumped back up, shook it off, and picked up her bike and got it stan:ed just in time. Souza almost caught her, but Holladay took off before Souza could pass her. Holladay still managed to take first, with Souza in second. RESULTS PIW OPEN: I. Nick Gibson (KTM): 2. Jordan Williams (KTM); J. Austin Be<:ker (KTM); 4. Austin Hass. 50 (4.6): I. JANUARY 12,2005 • CYCLE NEWS Woodland MX Park Bunker On Firel By JUSTIN WHARTON WOODLAND, WA, NOV. 7 oodland scrambles veteran Mark Bunker was unstoppable, winning five out of six motos in the Before The Hill. 12Scc Expert and 250cc Expert classes. He only lost a mota because of a fall in the 125cc class. In the Before The Hill class, Bunker had some stiff competition from former Mini star J.J. Niemi, but Bunker hung it out and won both motos. Niemi (2-2) had to settle for second, and Joe Pearson (3-4) was third. Zach Fleming (7-3) had bursts of speed, but his erratic style got the best of him and he ended up in fourth. Taking the final top-five position was Richie "Rich" Ferzacca (4-6). The 12Scc Expert class saw some awesome racing. In the first moto, Bunker, Niemi and Ross Johnson waged an intense battle. Bunker had the lead, but Johnson and Niemi were nipping at his heels. Bunker won that moto, but the second mota saw Bunker and Niemi both disappear from the lead, handing it to Johnson, who then had some easy going up front, but Bunker and Niemi had their work cut out for them. The twosome sliced their way back through the pack, putting in some blistering lap times, but it wasn't enough, as Johnson took an easy win. Chris Holum took second, and Bunker took third. Johnson (3-1) took the overall win, while Bunker (1-3) took second. third went to Donny Sheats/ey (5-4), fourth to Niemi (2-9), and Manhew Kelly (4-8) took fifth. Bunker wasn't about to lose again, so he went out and smoked the 250cc Expert class. Taking second was Jeremy Despain (4-3), and Sheatsley (7-2) took third. Joe Brockaway (6-4) came out of the woodwork to race again and took fourth, and fifth went to David Uapitan (5-5). The Over 30 Expert class was won by veteran Pro rider Eric Loney, who won both motos to take the overall win over L1apitan (2-4). Ryan Anderson (4-3) took third, Doug Lange (5-2) took fourth, and Tim "TW." Wiles (3-5) finished fifth. W laney (Hon); 2. Ian Hoover (Kaw): l. Jesse Hanc:uff (KTM); 1. Dayton Hunen (Kaw); 5.
