OBER FLORESVIW, TX, NOV. 25-28 T he fourth annual USA Team Motocross Championships was a huge success, with a record turnout of media, riders (I I 12) and spectators (3000) in attendance. The four-day event featured a $24,800 Pro/Am race that drew top riders from around the country. It was a two-mota format. running 30 minutes plus one lap per moto. There was also a halftime pit-bike race on Sunday afternoon that was qUite entertaining. The VP Racing Fuels-sponsored event was held under cool, sunny skies on a rough but moist and loamy race track. Track builder Mike Pitts and crew did a fine job preparing the track and detouring water from the heavy rains that pounded the facility just days prior to the event. Factory KTM/Red Bull/Munn Racing/Bell HelmelS/Alpinestars-backed Mike Alessi was all business, winning the Pro/Am Open overall (with a I-I clean sweep), as well as the 2S0cc Expert and Four-Stroke Expert classes. In the first Pro/Am moto, Mike's younger brother jeff pulled the holeshot, followed by Ty Conner, Mike, Thomas Hahn, Robbie Smith, Kevin Johnson and J.j. Pecsok. As the pack entered the first downhill, Mike took the lead and began to pull away. Amsoil/Chaparral/ Factory Connection/American Honda-backed Tommy Hahn quickly got past Jeff and tried to keep pace with Mike. but Mike took the moto win uncontested with a 25-second lead. even with his KTM stuck in third gear due to a lost shifter. Hahn finished second with a comfortable lead over Yamaha-mounted Conner. who held off a hard-charging jeff lap after lap. Jeff sellied for fourth. Suzukimounted James Marshall was fifth. In moto two, the Rat Rac:ing/Scott/Motorexbacked Conner pulled a huge holeshot as the pack disappeared down the hill. However, Mike and Hahn quickly got past Conner and again started to pull away. with Conner giving chase. Then Jeff and Colorado's Matt Karlsen got around Conner as well, giving Conner fifth for the moto. jeff finished third and Karlsen was fourth after an epic battle with Marshall, Clayton Miller, Charles Castloo and Pecsok. In the largest team race of the day, Honda· mounted Wil Hahn pulled a nice holeshot over his 39 competitors in the prestigious 125cc Open class. Wil went on to win the moto over Team Texas riders Austin Miller and Ronny jackson. However, Wil's teammates Justin Kopcak and Hector Collins finished out in I Ith and 22nd, giving Team Kansas third overall on the day. Team Texas took the overall win, as third team member Brandon Cleland finished 15th. Team Louisiana - consisting of Tyler R. Begue (eighth), Adam Kirchner (ninth) and Ryan S. Serrano (10th) - claimed second overall. Minnesota's Clarion Chapiewski led' his team to victory in the 65cc junior contest, with teammates Zac McBryde and Racheal Cecil placing fjlth and 19th, respectively. Team Colorado - consisting of Russ Lanne (sixth). Jonathan Collins (seventh) and Gavin Silver (12th) - placed second. eN CYCLE RANCH MX PARK FLORESVILLE, TEXAS RESULTS: NOVEMBER 25-28, 2004 50 JR: I. jessy Bink Lewis (lem); 2. Hicks Hauls the Mail in Marlette By BART NEWMAN MARLETTE, MI, NOV. 7 w: Bobby Garrison claimed victories in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at round 11 of the MX West Nevada State Championship Series in Fernley, Nevada. JANUARY 12, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS 1I Hicks returned from the Amateur National in Tennessee with one goal in mind: a top·three finish in the AMA District 14 motocross year-end standings. To accomplish that would take winning some races, and that's just what he did at Freelin MX, aboard his Col· lege Bike Shop/HRP/Link Inc./Throllie jockey/Dad & Granddad-backed machines, winning four motos in four tries and grabbing overalls in both the I25cc B and 2S0cc B classes. When the light went green for the first 125cc B moto, Hicks was ready, and he pulled the pack around the first bend. From that point on, his rear rend was all they would see or Hicks. james Maron, Joel Binge and Adam Schuman gave chase. That running order held for most of the moto: Hicks was gone, Maron rode around in a lonely second, and Binge and Schuman traded pOSitions several times, but Binge claimed third. In the second moto, Hicks once again was quick on the trigger finger, nailing another holes hot and quickly building a lead on the rest of the field. The race was now for second, as Schuman, Maron and Binge waged a war for the runner-up position. Maron found his way past Schuman in the black-dirt section to claim second at the halfway point. With the white flag in hand, Hicks had the lead by nearly 18 seconds and wasn't going to be beat. Maron held off the challenges of Schuman, who was the last man in the top three. That running order held throughout the last lap. with Hicks getting the win, and the second·moto finishes matched the day's overall standings. "The Tech-Care Suspension crew has my bikes working great, and I really liked the Freelin MX facility," Hicks said. "The track was killer on
