Utah Sport Riders Association Thanksgiving Classic MX Race Day 2: Mesquite Moto-X Park PHOTO BY ED HEDDENlMf.\ PRO FOTO Humphries Takes It to the House By DICK GOODWIN MESQUITE, NV, NOV. 27 th racers from nine states converging on W, the awesome Mesquite Moto-X Park, and hundreds of riders signing up, classes were stuffed all day long. One of the more intense contests was the 33-rider-strong Open Junior class. Pre-race favorite Brodie Humphries lived up to his advance billing, nailing the opening holeshot. Brennan Stewart was locked in behind him, but the rider on fire was Shane Koia. who ripped past Stewart before the big hill and then scooted into the lead a couple of turns later. Brock Bryant and Chris Powell came up fast. making it a tight five-man scrap for the lead. Humphries sliced past Koja in the sweeper to grab the point, as Stewart opened up a lead in third. Koja went down on the east side, giving Humphries an easy win. Stewart held off Jake Poole and Bryant for second. Focused and determined, Bryant shot off the line to lead Wade Briggs and Coby Paugh as the second half opened up. Humphries was buried somewhere in the vicinity of downtown Mesquite. Powell made some early moves, battling through the pack to take over second. Humphries, on a mission, charged aU the way up to third by lap two and then made a whiteflag-lap pass for second, but Bryant was long gone, taking the second-moto win. Humphries' strong second was good enough to edge Bryant for the overall Open Junior crown. Poole, Zuroske held a riders' meeting to explain the loop and which arrows to follow. The I I sections would include some scenic trails overlooking the lake at Valley Branch Retreat. At roughly I I a.m., 60 riders took off into the woods to be scored by the Mooch Motorcycle Club (for more information, check out www.moochmc.com) at the I I different sections. This year's entrants included three Mooch entries: father and son Frank and Jason Haines, along with Vintage rider Jan Warner (whose son Jesse was helping with scoring in section four). Section I I was a good spectator spot, as it was close to signup and was one of the more challenging sections, set in a ravine with plenty of rocks. This is where Ryan Young was nice enough to make some extra runs to entertain the spectators after he had finished the day with a score of 15. The Champ class was won by Adam Blumhorst, with a score of 5 I. The Expert class was won by Chris Zuroske, with a score of 30. Second-placed Matt Koenig scored a 33. The Advanced class featured a very close battle, with Alan Bechard winning with a score of 29, ahead of second-placed Brad Baumert, with a score of 31, and third-placed Robert Brown, also with a 31. Baumert led going into section I I but carded a three, while Bechard 76 Nathan Ambrose and Curtis Jorgensen earned spots three through fIVe in the overall standings. Honda hotshoe Chris Champlin put a hurtin' on a group of really fast old guys - the Over 30 Intermediate class. Eric Jones grabbed the early lead, but Champlin shot past him at the hill. Jimmy Chamberlin battled into second, while Randy Covington, in third, was holding off Russ Smith and Doug Clements. Champlin cruised to win number one, as Jones mounted a late charge to secure second. Chamberlin rolled home in third. Champlin jumped the field as mota two fired up. Smith and Clements were arguing over second. Jones came on quickly, but he didn't have anything for Champlin. Late in the race, Jones made a final push, but Champlin still edged him for the win - and the overall. Chamberlin rode a solid third to third overall, while Covington led Clements and Jeff Lloyd in the final tally. eN MESQUITE MOTO-X PARK MESQUITE, NEVADA RESULTS: NOVEMBER 27, 2004 (DAY 2) P!W PP: I. California Motorcycle Road Race Association The Grange Garner, Alamangos Bob for Apple Valley Victories By ROD GIRARD APPU: VALLEY, CA, NOV. 7 he white flag is out on another race season, and although most individual titles are locked up, the Beginner and Expert Overall battles would go down to the last lap. In Beginner Overall, two young titans, Bryce Kornbau and Justin Ducut, are within 18 points of each other as they continue to mix it up on the track. Neither Ducut nor Kombau are ready to concede the title to the other, and December promises some good times. In the Expert Overall chase, Scott Garner is leading Leonard Mellgren by a scant nine points. Garner is poised to win his first overall championship, and this will prove to be a close match, coming down to the last checkered flag of the season if Mellgren doesn't forget his tech inspection. Formula Extreme may be eclectic in form, but it makes for great racing, pitting a variety of machines and riding styles against one another. Race one thundered off the line with Craig Crawford raking the early lead. Chris A1amangos, a definite wild card in this mix, was on the charge in second, followed by Leigh Crawford and Mellgren. Alamangos took the T lead from Craig on lap two, with Mellgren moving in to challenge. Mellgren got around Alamangos on lap three. only to hand the point back to Alamangos on lap four. Almost lost in the lead action, Gamer moved up to third, with Leigh hanging on to fourth, as his brother Craig faded. In the later stages, Alamangos was able to hold off Mellgren for the win, and Garner nailed down third. At the flag, Leigh bettered his closely matched twin brother for fourth. A1amangos was quickest off the line in race two, with an energized Gamer in second. Slight~ warming track conditions seemed to turn the tide in race two, with Garner dominating, as he and Mellgren pulled out to a comfortable cushion. Mellgren kept the pressure on Garner to the finish but couldn't force a mistake, giving Garner a well-earned victory. In an almost anticlimactic chain of events, Mellgren was disqualified for failing to tech. When the dust settled, Garner had the overall, A1amangos took an impressive second, and Craig camfe back to wrench third from Leigh. Wrapping up, Alamangos couldn't be contained, taking the win in a four.way battle for the lead of the first Expert Formula-GP
