Mid-South Youth Hore Scrombles Series Cross Country Motorsports Championship Round 4: The Big Stripper Thurman Triumphsl By DEBBIE ALLEN LYNNVILLE, IN, NOV. 14 T he Mid-South Youth trekked north to Indiana's number-one riding spot, The Big Stripper. As usual, the Lynnville Area Dirt Riders club created a technical course, and this time they held no punches for the 96 riders in the Pirelli/Moose/MaxxisfAmerican Patriot Getaways-supported series. It was a tough track, but enjoyed by all, and somehow even the Pee Wee classes were up for the challenge, with Sam Thurman and Austin Smith leading them into Victory Lane. Off the start line for the 7- to B-year-olds, 23 Pee Wees meandered along the motocross trail, with Smith leading them up to the first big hill. As expected, everything quickly came to a halt, as the riders had their first lesson on bottlenecks. Fortunately, there were plenty of spectators on hand to lend assistance. Likewise, the 4- to 6-year-old riders head to deal with their first pileup. Zach Kirchoff was the first to overcome the big hill, and he then led for several laps until Thurman took the lead. "It was kind of hard to go up that hill, but somebody helped me," Thurman said. "One guy had to be up front and one guy had to be in back, and they had to pull me up there." "It was kind of steep," remarked Ben jones, who placed third in the Pee Wee (4-6) class. "It looked like it was straight up and straight down. I didn't like that too well." Riding up front in the Junior A division were Jordan Ashburn and Cory Buttrick. Ashburn got the holeshot, with 17 riders following him; he led until the second lap', when he ran into someone and Buttrick passed him. The Midtown Body Shop/Enduro Engineering/ Moose/Hale and family-backed Buttrick of Logan, Ohio, had a great ride, winning his first Mid-South race. Unable to get by most of the lappers, Ashburn was happy with second, and Daniel Sullivan finished third. "I had a lot of fun, and this is a good series," Buttrick said. "I think I'm going to try to hit some more of these." Hattiesburg Cycles-backed Tyler Carter won the junior B class. Making seven laps, he tore open a new trail as he weaved in and out of all the downed riders. Riding his Suzuki RMBS, Carter got the lead on the first lap and never looked back. "I got a bad start and was about in 15th place," Carter recounted. "These people kept falling over, and I just went right through them." Mason Thurman got the holeshot in junior B class and led for most of the first lap. On the last lap, he walked away from a hard crash that tore up his bike, making it an interesting but expensive week for Mason. Tanner Byarly and Zach Nash took second and third, and Michael Huddleston and Kurt Seigal finished out the top five.
