"I guess we're just crazy, us motocrossers," laughed 250cc Expert rider Chris Dennison of Albuquerque, noting that there's not much that would cause a motocross race to get canceled. "I've seen very few races [get] canceled. Hardly ever happens." Cloudcroft's Matt Presler agreed. "Motocross racers are the biggest die-hard racers," Presler said. "They brave all the elements. If it was pouring rain out here, we'd be out here racing. It would have to get awful for us not to be racing." Presler, who won both the Over 30 Amateur and I25cc Novice classes on Sunday and leads the points standings in both, said it was probably only highway conditions that kept some riders from making it to the event. "If the racers didn't have so far to travel, they would be here," he said. "They wouldn't mind. These conditions are great. The racers like the wet conditions like this. It makes it more challenging, and sometimes the better riders are shown. It separates the riders, for sure, whenever the conditions are slick like this. It's great." Lisa Berry, a 17-year-old Alamogordo High School senior who was competing in her first race this season, also liked the conditions. "The track's in real good condition," Berry noted. "I like it muddy. You get a lot of traction." Berry was back on the track after playing soccer for the Tigers this fall and being elected homecoming queen. She who won the Women's I25cc-and-Up contest and competed against the men in the I25cc Novice class. "I've picked it up a lot," said Berry, who's been racing for four years. "I know I have. But I know I can go faster. [I just want] to have fun and do better for myself and see if I can get better." That's pretty much the same goal Cindy Presler has. Matt's wife competed for the first time ever on Sunday. "I just had a good time," Cindy said. "That was the main thing." Matt, who encourages his wife and hopes his year-old son will ride someday, has loftier goals. He wants to win the points title when the season wraps up in April. Therefore, his pair of wins on Sunday made him feel good. ''I'm pretty happy," he said. "I could always do better. You've got to always want to do better, and I always do." RESULTS 50 (4.6): l. SErRA Volunteer Hare Scrambles Haulin' In The Hills Edmondson Waves Bye-Bye in Bybee By TIM BETTIS BYBEE, TN, NOV. 14 This round of the SETRA Hare Scrambles I Series was held in the spectacular hills of Tennessee. With the sun shining brightly and temperatures in the 60s, one couldn't ask for a better day to race. The 9.3-mile course stretched on and among three small mountains and a creek in the valley. The starting line was on a dew-covered grassy plateau on the first hill. The first drop of the flag went to the Master A dass, with KTM pilot Jack Burt gelling the first holes hot of the day. After 17 more flags, the race was on. About halfway through the first lap, riders found themselves face to face with their toughest obstacle: a twisting uphill with a combination of mud, rock, vines - and other bikes. The bottleneck gradually decreased, making way for more fast and furious racing. Several lead changes took place as riders jockeyed for the first pOSition. Being the first race, the track was free of ruts and berms but held the dew, water holes, and loose leaves and straw. As the day wore on, the dew dried, the water holes ran dry, the loose debris got pushed aside, and the track got even faster. Super Senior rider Mitch McRee began the race with a ninth-row start but finished the a.m. race in first place for a hard-fought win. 98 The p.m. race was set up for the A and B riders and proved to be exciting from start to finish. Less than 100 yards from the drop of the flag, the number-one and -two AA riders, Yamaha-mounted Hutch May and KTM rider Bryan Henson, got together in the second turn, sending one of the bikes sideways into a tree and the other off course. Both riders came out unscathed but found the real trouble was battling back for their pOSitions. In the end, Stephen Edmondson took advantage of the slip, grabbing first place and holding on all the way to the finish. Henson finished second on the day. with May pulling in third. The MacDonald brothers put in some fine racing. Twelve-year-old Correy, aboard an 85, finished 22nd overall in the a.m. race out of I 13 racers, while his brother Tyler, at age 14, piloted his YZ450F to 48th spot overall in the p.m. race out of almost 90 A, B and Pro riders. Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series Cross Country Motosports Championship Round 4: The Big Stripper Mullins Smiles at The Big Stripper By DEBBIE AllEN LYNNVIUE, IN, NOV. 14 sk most men in the Mid-South Cross Country Motorsports Championship what The Big Stripper is, and they'll tell you that it's no lady. However, it is Indiana's hot spot for hare scrambles, and it brought about more than one smile among the 361 racers in attendance at the Mid-South's fourth round. Charles Mullins came, saw and conquered, walking away with the biggest smile. He got the A M-dass win and found himself $500 richer, as the Lynnville area's Hunting Club sponsored the prize for the overall winner. Racing his KTM, Mullins charged for the lead on the second lap and tried to ride smart and smooth from that point forward. "I just wanted to keep it up on two wheels so I could win," said the Plessinger Cycles/ O'Neal/Enduro Engineering/Tire Balls-backed Mullins. "The last lap, I was pretty nervous, because I went off of one of those ridges, but I got it up and I felt good." Off the start, Mullins was third, with John Robbins and P.A. Allen at the front and Doug Blackwell, Jeff Cregg. D.R. AlWood and the rest of the pack behind him. Indiana native Cregg was riding with a purpose. Although he suffered a back-of-the- pack start, he pushed himself to the limit. On the third lap, the Ben's Performance Center/Moose/Lidz by Fid/Johnny Signs/ Bloomington Power Sports-supported Cregg finally reached his goal. "I got around P.A., and that was my goal for the day," laughed Cregg. "Right before the last lap, there was a corner where he followed a lapper, and I took the inside line and got around him. I put it on during the last lap. It was a tough day, and I'm tired of this 'second' stuff. I'm ready to get a win. But I'll take second." "I don't know when I got into third place," said Black's Motorsports/MX Tech/Scott/ Mother's Wax-supported Atwood, "because I was mostly riding in sixth or seventh the whole race until the last lap." For most of the race, Allen held on to second or third place until he got tangled with a lapper on the last lap. He literally had to get off of his bike, because the two bikes were stuck together. Allen came in fourth, and John Maschino finished in fifth place. KTM-mounted Paul Michels and Motor Exchange/H usqvarna/Maxxis-backed Marty Michels enjoyed a father-and-son win. Paul grabbed the Super Senior win, while Marty captured the 2S0cc A-class win. The Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series just keeps getting bigger and better. American Patriotic Getaways proudly provided free vacations for the Vet B and Vet C winners. Danny Coultas and Jerry Fishburn not only walked away with their class wins, they are also now scheduled for some R&R at Gatlinburg, Tennessee. RESULTS OA: I.Charles Mullins (KTM); 2.
