T he Desert Wheels Motorcycle Club played host to the C alifo r nia Rac ing Clu b for round fo ur of t he 16th annual Sponsorship Series . The sa nd track lo cat e d withi n t he bounda ries of Edwards Air Force Base was prepped to perfection, and cool temperatures he lped keep the layo ut in exce llent shape fo r a full day of racing. O ne rider w ho got along just fine w ith the shifting san ds was Ryan Reina , who swept the 12Scc Inte rmed iate field with a perfect I- I sho wing. Ope ning-moto action saw Nick Sanchez emerge with the holeshot and r un out front for a couple of laps be fore Reina ca me fro m his sixth-place start to o utbrake him at the end of a fast strai ght for the lead. Reina qu ickly put a co uple of seconds on Sanchez, w ho wa s busy fe nding off challe nges from both Ricky Hemme and Be nny Bre ck. Bre ck made his way into sec ond just be fore the white nag flew and was actually gaining slightly on Reina on th e final circuit, but t im e ran out. Sanchez finis he d third , w ith C ame ro n He iss e r overcoming a bad start for fourth , ahea d of Brett Harmon and Zac Fullmer. He mme got the mote-t w o holes hot , but Brec k was leadi ng after just a few turn s. Half a lap lat e r, Re ina ha d his Motore x/Dunlop/ O ' Neal- backed CRF2S0R in the point posit ion and was again in chi ng a w ay fr o m h is competition. Breck did his best to reel in the fleeing Reina, but to no avail; he w ould have to settle for another sec o nd-place finish. Sanchez was again third at the line, followed by Fullmer and Harmon. Brandon Gillespie has been a 12Scc Novice front -runner th roughout this series, but o n this down Pe rry but couldn 't make the pass. Bryant eas ily took the o vera ll. Davis' consistent rides earned second . Sampson Cy cles-s ponsored Fitzwater (3-4) too k third. Perry's hard -fought 6-3 finishes were good enough fo r fourth . Fifth went to Pfeiffer (4-S). Ryan 118 day things just clicked for the TRE/Chaparral- sponsored Suzuki rider. as he pretty much crushed his competitors. Gillespie turned his openi ng-moto ho leshot into a deci sive 20second lea d by the checkers. Andrew Couto battled with Kevin Bey and Sammy Yacovelli en ro ute to his second-place finish. Gillespie aced the secon d-moto start, and Couto kept him honest for much of the race . Gillesp ie lit the after burners in the closing stages for another convincing win . Couto finished a safe dista nce ahead of Yacovelli, in third . Bey went 3-4 fo r thi rd overall , topping the S-3 tally of Yacovelli and the 7-S score of Cody Maness . The 2SDcc Novice overall honors went to Suzu ki-mounted Tanner Alexander, who split moto wins with Putt e r Ashford . Alexander's 1-2 tally got the better of Ashford's 3-1 efforts. Jo nathan Beld ing (2-4) claimed third , wit h Bre ndan McConnachie (4-3) and jaso n Pa r sons (S- S) fin ish ing fourth and fifth overall, res pectively. YZ4S0 F-mounted Mike Crosby went four for four to pull down victories in both the Junior Vet Intermediate and Vet Inte rmediate ranks . jon Berg was runner-up to Crosby in both Vet races, ahead of Robbie Dunham (4- 3) and Justy Mendibles (3-4). Mend ibles returned to go 2-2 in junio r Vet action, over Dunham (3-3) and Ole Henden (4-4).
