Owen Cup Lincoln Trail Motosports PHOTOS BY J AMES PIN CKARO Kenyon Claims the Cup! By JAMES PINCKARD CASEY, T IL, OCT. 31 he first-ever Owen Cup race was held over the Halloween weekend at Lincoln Trail Motosports. This "appreciation event" was hosted by Owen Motor Sports lnc., located in Cha rleston, Illino is. The Owen Cu p was for 85ec riders on either Suzukis o r Hondas. T he race was totally professional and well~ organ ized. The crew even threw in a hint of Loret ta's by giving every racer a bib! There are all kinds of "special" events for large bikes . but this was the first event to cater to t he 85ce Mini riders. W ith a big event comes a big p rize . In keeping with that tradition. the Owen Cup's first prize was a 200 4 Honda CRF SO, comple te ly de c ke d o ut with O w e n Mo tor Sports team graphics. The top three received Deale r Do llars. along with the big checks . just like at the Supercross! (Eve ryo ne loved the big checks). T he bes t prize was the O w e n C up itself: a beauti ful piece of artwork that will stay on d isp lay after t he race at Owen Motor Sports. Each rider who wins the event will have his name eng raved on the cu p, which will live forever in Illinois motocross histo ry! The entire race was to p-notch, includ ing a podium fo r the w in ners , the event looked mo re like a Nation al race tha n a local eve nt . W ith such great pr izes on the line , the riders we re ready to roll. The moto would be 15 minutes plus tw o laps. This race was intense and re ally tested t he r ide rs. T hose w ho had enough drive t o become t he firs t Cu p Champion showed their race face early on . Wh e n t he gate d roppe d. a se a of ye llow flooded the first turn. F&S Suzuki jockey Kyle Burlile let the way. w ith Flat O ut/ Bridgestone! Suspension Plus/ Mo ne y Station-s po nsore d Suzuki rider Dann y Rocke and Suzuki jockey Jaco b Kenyon in tow. At t he en d of the first lap, Kenyon was hun ting for a way to the fro nt . Kenyon worked his way past Rocke and then se t his sights on Burble. the leader. Kenyon put Jacob Kenyon made his the first name to ever be engraved on the Owen Cup. the brake s on Burlile 's lead be fore the en d of the second lap and then worked the track like a surgeon. cutting and slicing his way to lap times matched by no other. While Kenyon worked his magic up fro nt. it looke d like Burl ile was starti ng to feel the effects of the long moto, as Rocke was on him like hair o n a monkey! Roc ke made his mo ve, passing Burlile for the second spot. But by then, for Rocke, it was to late : Kenyon was on his way to the w inning of the first -ever Owen Cup race - and the CRFSO! Second went to Rocke. and Burlile was third overall. By t he se co nd ro und of mo to s, the sandy, rain-soak ed track had badly deteriorated. When t he ga te dropped , Pric e gra b bed the po int position. w ith Davis and Pe rry banging bars in secon d . T he action was tig ht on the rutt e d course. T hen , on the second lap , Davis a nd Perry collided in a tum, w hich gave Price a little breathing room. Davis still held second. Perry bo bble d but ret a ined t hird . wi th Fitzwat er ap plying pre ssu re . T he collisio n ha d bro ken Perry's exh aust loose , and It was nappi ng up and dow n. On t he t hird lap, Price and Da vis resumed their battle from mo ta o ne, and Perry caugh t the two of them. O nce again, tho ugh, Perry sta lled in a tum. Th is time, Fitzwate r took DECEMBER 15, 2004 • C YC LE N EWS th ird, now followed clos e ly by Pfe iffe r. With two laps remaining, Pe rry restarted in fifth, and he qu ickly reclaimed fourth from Pfeiffer. At the nag, it was Price by a bikelengt h over D ~v j s . T hen Perry ' s m uffl e r fell off. b ut he st ill manage d to pass FitzWater at the line for th ird. Pfeiffe r edged o ut West for fifth. Pr ice 's 3-1 tally e arne d the overall win . Secon d went to "Mr. Co nsistent," Davis (2-2). W it h no m uffle r. Perry ( 1-3) sec ure d thi rd . Fitzw ater (5-4) bea t o ut Pfeiffer (4-5) fo r fourth. In the 2SOcc A class, Pe rry to o k bot h motos wire to wire, basically uncontested. Davis and De an Day swapped mo tos , w ith Day ta king home sec o nd via a 3-2 tally, over Davis. Price po st ed sol id rides to finish fou r t h. Sco tt ie Shipley (6-5) edged out Wes t for fifth. In the 85cc (9- 13) class, 27 riders braved the weather and t he ra in-soaked cou rse .
