There w as a bit of a woods section , a roc k bed and log-jum p area, and th e co urse finished back on th e mo tocross lo o p . T he TORO race rs were not use d to this (they usually run o n seven o r mo re m ile s o f w ood ed terrai n), b ut mo st raved abo ut th e fun factor. At Satu rday nights' trop hy awards dinner, co ntes tants had to stand o n o ne leg w hile club vice president Kurt Sofka po ured bucke ts of ice do w n th e ir pants, fro nt and back! Th e last man stan ding (e r, grimacing?) wo n the prize . Oldsters fro m three other O TMX chap ters Lo s Ange les , Ce nt ra l Valley a nd Las Vegas joined the Riverside hosts for the two-day eve nt. Novic es kicked off th e action , wi th Hugh Blacka lead ing th e O ver 40 division for t hre e laps. Bob Walpert took ove r the lead but cou ld no t hold o ff hard -charg ing C hris Dysart. Blacka again snar ed th e ho leshot in mo to two, but this time Mike Pro bst sto le th e lead , befor e Dysart ag ain m ove d to t he fro nt an d held it to t he checke red . On Sunday, it appea red t hat Ce ntral Valley's Randy Go d ich wou ld termi nate Dysar t' s w inning streak, but Dysart muste red late passes for top hono rs o n the weekend. In the O ver 50 No vice class, Fred Kalmick pulled such a huge lead tha t he not on ly caught up to the Over 40 No vices but passed nearly ha lf of the first w ave . (Race committee , tak e no te !) But the real ra cing was m idpack, as a four-wa y, back - and- fo rth ba tt le e nsu ed between Ro be rt McCormick, Ste ve Alexander, Denise deVines and Steve Pobjoy. Phil Black and Ge orge Speari ng stayed w ithin striking distance but could only muste r sec o nd and th ird , respectively. Mo r ro w Fleet and Mark Schuster kep t t he pr e ss ure o n Mike Bo nef ant in t he O ver SO Am at eurs, but Bo ne fant stayed determin e d and pulled off overa ll w ins o n bo th days. Fleet (3 - 1-3- 2) edge d out Sh uste r (2- 3- 2 -4) for second place . On Sunday, Mort Smith pursued the elusive Neal but could o nly get close e nough to eat his roost.
