Since the soil was already pre tty mo ist, it didn't take long for
the track to get muddy.
It's no secret that California isn't famous for producing great
mud riders . The Golden State is blessed with enou gh year-roun d
sunshine tha t whe n it does rain, racers have th e luxury of just
wait ing until the next weekend, beca use it usually doesn't last for
lo ng. It was going to take a lot more than a lack of experience,
however, to keep the riders in Madera off the track .
O ne kid who didn't have any trouble adapt ing was Madera's
own Casey Hinson. Cele brating his 16th birthday. the American
Suzuki-backed r ide r turned incre d ible laps o n his RM2S0 .
Because some of the Amateur Nationals, such as Loretta Lynn's,
are notorious for being muddy. Hinson was overjoyed at the
opportunity to get in some practice on a sloppy track. He didn't
see m to suffe r from a lack of experience. He was about th e
on ty ride r at the track who continued to jump everything and
hit every ob stacle nearly at regular speed.
As 125cc riders are typ ically younger. they were definitely
the ones with the most enthusiasm as a group. The Beginner,
Novice and Intermediate class competitors didn't back down .
The re was a series to thin k about. and every point was
precious . Nick Marmolejo led the first 125cc Beginne r mota
from start to finish. He bobbled and almost crashed a coup le of
times, but so did everyone else on the track. Behind him. Kody
Melendrez and Matt Baca completed the top three.
Dustin Pipes topped Michael Dunnagan and Richard Harmon
in the I25cc Youth class. He also did the same in mot a one of
t he 125cc Inte rmed iat e division, whe re he raced eventual
second-place finisher Dun nagan, as well as Kevin Wells and
Chris Pode rgois.
Eventually, the track got too messy for racing to continue.
The race was called after every class had run its first mota, and
overa ll resu lts we re based on that alone. Tho ugh the day was
cut short, there we re n' t many co mplaints from tho se go ing
home early. They were going to need all the extra time they
could get just to have the ir bikes cleaned up and ready to go for
the next weekend's series final.
