Chowchilla B ar nbur ner S eri es Ray Huff Memorial Rac e Chowchilla Fa irg r ounds PHOTOS BY KAREN GOULDICHECKEREDFLAGPHOTOS.COM Wood On Fire at Barnburner Benefit By KAREN GOULD CHOWCHILLA, CA, OCT. 30 Two hundred and twenty riders came to the I Din t-lotorsports Chowchilla Barnburner Ser ies Ray Huff Memorial Race. Included in the day 's events were four Money ra ces, w ith the largest purse paying $1000 to the wi nner of the Ray Huff 2S0cc-and-Up Open contest. The event started with a bagpipe tr ibute played for Ray Huff. and a memorial lap ridden by Ryan Huff. Ray's grandson. Twe nty- two Open Experts competed in four heat races, two se mis and a last -chance q ualifier for one o f the 12 spots in the main event. Pe rformance Cycle 's Matt Proto, on the front line at the pole after wi nning his hea t race aboard the Checkered Flag Photos.com/Riddle Racing 450, got the holeshot in the main , o nly to get tangled up with Kenny "The Slammer" Carlotta in tum three. Proto was done. On the restart , Donnie Howard was the first to tum one, and the competition was on between him, Mike Besemer, Ch ris Hart and Jimmy Wood . Rodney Spencer Sr., aboard a Rod Lake /Robert Boten-tuned Yamaha 450. worked his way into second, followed by Hart a b o ard a Zanotti Racing Honda 4S0. Then Carlotta drew another red flag. Wood to o k the lead from t he staggered restart to the finish, in front of Spencer and Hart . Carlotta won the 100cc Adult money race earlie r In the night . In the Youth 100cc Huff mon ey event, D.J. Sha rkey got the hoteshot. followed by KLH Racing 's Pa t r ic k McNamara. Sharkey led through the se ve nt h la p of this 20 -lap main event. Beh ind him , in the race for second, Briar Bauman overtook McNamara, and Stevie Bonsey was com ing up fast . Mikey Avila had worked his way up fro m fifth and was on the Lrl move , trying to overtake Bonsey. Bauman overtook Sharkey. Avila got past Bonsey, and the race finished Bauman . Sharkey, Avila. Bauman won the 85cc money event , in front of Cody Silva and Joe 's Towing's Justin Petz . Danielle Diaz led the eight-rider pack of Powder Puff riders from pole to pole . followed by Danielle Caldeira and Michelle Silva. In the Mom s event, Dan ielle 's mom, Christine. was enjoying her steady pace but to pick it up when Cho wchilla Awards and Engrav ing's Kim Hickman passed her. Retak ing t he lead , Caldeira finished first, fo llo we d by Hickman. Fred Bennett is 55 years o ld but competes with the best of them , on th is night wi nning the Senior A and Vet Over 40 classes and getting the holeshot in the Huff 2S0-and -Up money semi. Bennett - wh o , after a long night of radng. loo ks like he just stepped out of the shower - still rides the bike that he rode at Ascot. " Uncle Scott" Taylor finished the Vet B contest in the second spot and celebrated his birthday at the track. As they lined up fo r the se cond rnoto, there was no reason to think that there woul d be any ma jo r changes . But Illinois motoc ross is like Illinois w eathe r: If you don't like it, just wetr . it Bryce Bowman targeted the 125cc B victory and took it w ith a 5 -1 sco re on day twa of the South Fork Dirt Riders Appreciation Weekend. 46 w ill change.
