Clawson Moto rspo rts/CMA Bounty Hun ter MX Se ries Round 8: Madera Speedway Weigand Outruns t he Big Guns By EDDIE GRAVELINE MADERA, CA, OCT. 9 t had bee n a long run for t he rider s in the 2004 Bou nty Hunte r Seri es, and they were loo king fo r some closure as the final weekend go t un de r way in Made ra , Ca liforn ia. Roun d eight was he ld o n Saturd ay night , and eve n though the finals were to be he ld the ve ry next day, this wou ld be the last race of the series for the Pros. Just fo r th is occasion, a brand- new track was built on the infield of Madera Spee dway, an asphalt car-racing ova l. The track was tight and technical, and it fea tured one of the scariest whoop sections of the year. While that may have had the Amateur racers a little wo rried , everyone was looking fo rward to watching I S4 the Pros batt le o n the grueling circ uit . Fittingfy, the Pro classes we re the deep e st they'd been all season, featuring many facto ry stars and several nat ionaJ-caliber riders . The first action came in the 12Scc Pro class, where Mike Alessi struggled to get good starts aboard one of the few two-strokes in the field. The pack up front in the first moto consisted of Steve Mert ens, Billy Laninovich, Justin Bucke lew and Alessi, w ho was ab le to make some key passes on t he fir s t fe w lap s and take t he checkered flag. The second race was a differe nt story, as Amsoil/Factory Connection Hon da's Lanino vich fo un d his st ride and rode a great moto. Still, Alessi's 1-2 punch was goo d for the class win , followed by Laninovich and Bucke lew.
