Ho w ev er, Mother Na ture had he r own plans for t he final race ever to be held at th e Stanley Draper Lake DRV Are a, wh ich will soo n be closed to off-road use. Rain the previo us we e k kept the dust down and the racing conditions favo rable , but it began raining again early on race day and it co ntinued all day long. Staying upr ight, keeping goggles clear from fog and mud, and pre venting mud -re lated bike problems were the major conce rn s. A fe w r iders dropped zeroes o n th e first lo o p to prove that c ircu mstances wo uld not hinder their det ermination . Among them were TSCEC AA riders Cole Kir kpatrick, Do n Hogan and Blake Brady; TSCEC A riders BillySpurlock and Thomas Hoover; BJEC M rider s Steve Leivan and Drew Chandl er; and Clint Carr, the current Arkansas Hare Scrambles Champion. Only tiebreaker points from the third chec k se parated them as they sta rted the second loo p. Loop tw o was 30 miles lo ng and includ ed "T he Sandbox," wh ich co nsisted of loose, sand y tra ils through fairly tight tr e es , but th e rain actu ally helped here by pac king th e sand tighter. Kir kpatric k, Ho gan , Lei van a nd Chandler remained on time through chec k seven . Check e ight, an em erg en cy chec k at th e end of The Sandbox, se parated the fastest riders at th e end of the day. Kirkp atrick be st ed the field with a time of B; 18 , w hile Hogan followed him with a 9;57. Leivan and Spu rloc k posted time s o f 10; 18 66 and 10:4B, respecti vely, wh ile Chandler tried to ke e p them in his grasp with an I I:3B. One m o re check would test the riders before the end of th e loo p, but only Kirkpatrick and 5CRfAnswer/Du nlop /RaceTech /5i1kolenebac ked Yam aha pilot Leivan arri ved in their minute . Hogan and Spurlock each dr opped one , while BJEC M rider Mall Lane dropped two. Chand le r w o uld retire w it h bike problems before the last check. The third loop would have continued to test th e riders ' perseverance, but it wasn't to be . For t he first time in 25 yea rs, th e race wa s called d ue to conditio ns. By the end of the second loop, many of the riders had lost their brakes , and clear goggles we re hard to come by. The scorecard s wer e tur ned in, and Kirkpatric k had thrott led hard to ta ke t he overall win by carding a score of eight. Hogan and Leivan both dropped nine, but Hogan's 571 emerge ncy po int s edged out Leiva n's 589 . Spurlo ck secured th e fourth place with 12, and Lane rode strong to round out the top five with a score of 17. The conditio ns didn 't seem to ph a se Kirkpatrick.
