d e7'ENTS < > California Racing Club Sponsorship S eries Round I: Los Angeles Count y Raceway PHOTOS BY GR EG ROBERT SON It All Adds Up for Bey By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, OCT. 17 U sing a somewhat unlikely score of 6-2 for an o ve ra ll win, Suzuki jockey Kevin Be y topped the 125cc Novice class at Los Angeles County Raceway du ring the opening round of the 16th an nual Californ ia Racing Club/G alpin Ford -spo nso red Sponso rship Series. And re w Co ut o got a go od jum p off th e co ncrete start line to lead Brandon Gillespie, Max Harte r and Ch ris Pulliam as moto one got under way. By the end of lap two, Gille spie had clo sed to within st riking dist ance of Couto. Brendan McConnac hie made his way up fro m a seven th-p lace start to run a close third. A few se co nds back, Har ter co ntrolled the fourth slot , but he had his hands full with Tyle r Pierce , Pulliam, Bey and Greg Y ung. o Gillespie and McConnachie we re doubleteaming Couto, just waiting for him to make a mistake. but Couto held his own and took the hard-fo ught first -moto Victory. G illesp ie shadowed Co uto for a clo se second , w ith McC o nnac hie an e quall y close t hird . Fourth we nt to Pierce , and Pulliam held off Bey at the checkers for fifth. Sammy Yacovelli edged out Couto for the se cond-mota ho les hot , wh ile Har te r settled into th ird , ahead of Pierce and Bey. Couto started houndi ng Yacovelli for the lead at about the midwa y point , with Bey joining in. Couto w e nt do wn and finished a distan t 21st , wit h Bey picking up the slack and keep ing Y acovelli honest. Yacovelli got to the chec kers first, but it was Bey's 6-2 performance that added up to a wi n on this day. A 10 - 1 sco re ha nded Yacovelli the second -place trophy, ahead of Jonathan Higgins (8-3) and J.B. Pee k (7-4). McConnachie retu rned to get the holeshot in the opening 2SOcc Novice rnoto , and he ended up leading every lap. Jonathan Belding ke pt close tabs on McConnachie fo r the first co uple of circuits of the J.B. Memoria l Track before slipping ma king up t ime . H is han d ca me o ff t h e bars: t he crowd roared. O n t he last la p, all eyes were on t hat jump , an d again Spa r ks kicked it up a gea r and we nt fo r t he biggest jump of th e n igh t. At t he fi nis h. it was again Sp ar ks , Inga lls and Danh agga rd . " It wa s a great course , and I had a lot of fun," Sparks stated . "I w ish I had mo re peo ple to ride with , so I am asking my bud dies to get ou t and ride !" The b igge st clas s of t he da y was t he 0-90cc/0 -1 10 cc class, wi th 18 en tries. W he n all the pit bikes stormed the first corner, many cras he d to t he pavem e nt . Mark Zied ler nabb e d t he ho les hot on a KLX I 10, while everyo ne e lse picked u p t h e ir bikes a nd co ntin ued racing. By lap t hree, the to p five were set: Ziedler, Dan Cameron , Brian Gast , Trevo r Schuster and Lee The is. 44 back and being pressured by Couto, who wou ld finish a close third , behind Belding. Higgins kept Jason Parsons at bay fo r fourth . Belding led the first couple of laps of mo to two, with Jaso n Sanchez holding dow n second until a crash dropped hi m o ut of the race . M cC onnachie slowly ree led in Belding and slipped underneath him when Belding picked a bad line in a co rne r and got stuck beh ind a lapper. McConnachie pulled away fo r a perfect I- I tally. Consistent 4-4 rides earned Higgins third , over Couto (3-5) and De nnis Helse l (8-3). Kawasaki Te am Gre en 's Austin Po lit e lli smoked the 6scc (9- 11) field in the first moto, taki ng the win by a comforta ble margi n ove r Chris Carrillo, Damian Tacke tt and Tann e r The 125cc Novices leave the line fo r t heir first moto at the Ca lifornia Racing Club Spo n so rs h ip Serie s opener. Ke v in Bey (917)went 6-2 for the win. Lovgre n. Politelli wa s a no -show w hen the gate dropped for moto two, so Tackett and Lovgre n engaged in a battle over the top spot. The two fro nt-runners traded the lead back and forth , with Tackett prevail ing in th e moto and in the overall standings with a 3-1 tally. Lovgren's 4-2 score topped t he 2-4 tally of Ca rrillo. Shane M iller claimed fourt h on a 5- 3 showing. T he race in Bro ct on , Mas sac hus e tts, left fierce New Hampshire co mpeti tors Troy "The Mongoose" Estabrook of Manchester and Cory "Boo Boo" Hildeb ra nd of Milf rd within o o ne po int o f each ot he r fo r t he 125cc a nd 250cc Amateur titles. The champ ionships were decided at Jo lly Roger Motorsports Park. The day started off with Estabrook winning bo t h the 125c c and 250cc he at races in impressive fashion. It was then time for the first feature event of the night, the 125cc race . Estabrook qui ck ly took t he le ad and just decimated the field for an o utstanding victory, taking both the win and the New England Dirt Tra ck Seri e s' 125cc Amat eur C ham pio ns hip title! It was pe rfectly clear afte r Estab roo k's 40th Anniversary display of ta lent and det ermination thro ugho ut the last th re e races of the day that the only person w ho was going to beat him on this night would be himself. T hat proved to be true in the 2S0cc feature, when. in a bold and aggressive attempt to take over the lead, Est ab roo k fe ll victim to an unf ortunat e crash , a llow ing his com petito r H ild e b r an d t o run uncon t e ste d t o t he checkered flag and giving him the cham pionship in that class.
