IBriefly... The orga nizers threw something new at the riders by hauling in crushed rock and making an artificialsection for the spectators. The 40-yard-long "rock garden" was situated in the middle of a long straight just after the pit area and was followed by a series of telephone poles that were laid on the ground so that the riders had to jump over them . This area was a crowd pleaser and makingit interesting to see the different lines that the riders took . "It's cool to have something like that for the specta tors ," KTM's Kurt Caselli said . "It wasn't too hard and the rocks were pretty stable, so they weren 't skatingaround on you. It makes for a good spectator spot, you just had to worry about gett inga flat." Sundaywas Halloween, and during Saturday's com petition, Russ Pearson raced the 250cc Proclass in a Sponge&b Square Pants costume. chan ce of wrapping it up two weeks ago at Glen Helen and just had some problems. But today was a good day - I got a good start, had som e mistakes early, but came back and made it happen. 1am really happy for Y amaha and Zip-Ty Racing. At the start of the two-hour race , Woods got a good jump and entered turn one ahead of the pack but went wide at the exit, giving KTM factory-rider Kurt Caselli a clea r path to the fro nt. A turn later, Woods made another error, allowing both another KTM r ide r, David W idme r, and Team Green Kawasaki's Lance Smail by. " I bobbled in turn two and went off the trac k," Woods said. 'After tha t I thought, 'O kay, I'm just go ing to stay he re and try to work my way through. It's just the first lap, and we've got two hours left, and anything can happen .' From there , I just settled in and start ed picking people off." By th e end of the motocross portion of the co urse , Caselli had pulled several seco nds on the pack ; meanwhile Smail had moved past Widmer fo r second place, with Woods, Karlsen, Bo nds, Mon tclair Yamaha's Russ Pe arso n and Team Green's De stry Abbott in tow. De fe nding WO RCS champ Ty Davis was re covering from a mediocre start and news.com Lance Sm ail was one of the few riders who had plans worked out for the 2005 season.
