Dennis Watson Memorial Caruthers Fairgrounds Avila Beats His Goblin, Osbern By KAREN GOULD CARUTHERS, CA, OCT. 1 T he annual Caruthers Fair races dr ew more than 200 ride rs on eac h of the two nights . Th e Fre sn o Mot o rcycle C lub orchest rate d another gre at event, the sec o nd ann ual Denn is Watson Memo rial. Wat so n was a resident of Caruthers and o n the Caru thers Fair board. A motorcycle enthusiast, he was responsible for brin ging t he Fresn o Mo to rcycl e C lub to Ca ruthers to promote racing. He e njoyed rae lng at the fair every yea r. Watso n lost his life to cancer; his widow, Mary, still lives in Ca ruthers. Racing started o n this cushion oval with the Pee Wee 50s. for riders as young as 5 years old. In the 50cc (5-6) Stock class. ~ was Joshua Mare and Daniel Hess first and second across the line. One of the 80cc Expe rt Youth riders just shined in his perfo rma nce . Michae l Avila rode his first race eve r at the Caru thers fair when he was 4 years old. and he won the 50cc Stock class that night. After winning at Caruthe rs, he sta rted riding o ther venues and ot he r AMA District 36 eve nts. During 2000, he earned the num ber-two AMA West Coast Ama teur Nat iona l plate in the 50cc Modified class . In 2002, he had a bad cras h on a 65. but he came out o n an 80 in 200 3. Since rid ing 50s, Avila has fac e d fierce co mpetition fro m P.j. Osbem in every class. T his was Avila's night to bea t his "pers onal go blin." O sbern got the holes hot in th e 80cc Expe rt event , w hile Avila got pinched on the start and arrive d in the first tu rn in the fifth spo t. Avila worked his way to sec on d by the end o f th e first lap. Then. on the fourth lap, Avila sq uare d t he co me r to ove rtake Osbern for the lead and the w in. Eric England was third. Bac k on t he track fo r t he 100 cc Yout h Expe rt event, Avila and O sbe rn resumed their battle. Coming fro m third, Avil stuffed O sbe rn a in the th ird turn on the last lap and crossed the finish line first . In Satu rd ay's raci ng. England finished the 80cc Expert class in the first spot, w hile Patrick Os me r finished first in the 100cc Youth Expert event. By far t he large st class o n t he t rack on Satu rday night was t he O pen Novice event. Ten ride rs line d up fo r t his o ne , an d John Walke r led this class to the chec ker s. Th e Open Exp e rt eve nt was th e fastest class on the track. with six ride rs co mpe ting for t he fron t s po t. Brand o n Bergen a nd Ric k Hollenbe ck put on a show in this class. turn ing the fastest lap times of the night. Be rgen too k this victory easily on Friday night . On Saturday. Chad Foste r an d Colton Jo ne s took the chec ke rs first an d seco nd. respect ive ly. followed by Berge n and Jimmy McNe il. This weekend of racing was the last of the e igh t-race sum me r series pro mo te d at the Ca ruther s Fa irgro und s by t h e Fres no Mo torcycle C lub ea ch yea r. Th e seri es has been running for 27 years. and the fair is the eN last free-entry fair in Ca lifornia. Mid·Carolina Speedway Chavis Regal, Fuzzy Still on the Throne By LAURA DAVIS NEESES, SC,SEPT. 25 n 1 r Chavis was t he king of both the e 70/80cc Four-Stroke and MX Mini mains at Mid-Carolina Speedway. Blake Lomas stayed within a few bikelengt hs of C havis in the 70/80cc eve nt to take second. Kaiti McLane struggled wit h mechanical difficulties but was a respectable th ird. Marston Smoak led a packed field at the start of the MX Mini race. but Chavis went high in turn three and took the lead exiting tum four. Rutland took the lead briefly several t imes on the straights, but Jackson stuck w ith his fast high line , regaining the lead by the turns. T hese boys blew by so me lapped t raffic, and when t he c he c ke re d flag dropped . it was Jackson for the win. In the 50/60cc Two-Stroke cla ss , these same t w o rac e rs swi tc hed positions, with Rutland taking the win . There are muc h older riders who co uld lea rn a lot from observi ng the bo dy Eng lish of the se determined young competitors. In adult ac tion . th ree Charlies - William s, Sabatka Sr. and Sabatka Jr. - held down the first t hree SPOlS for the first half o f t he Ope n Amat e ur main.
