PHOT BY JAMEY BLUN T OS Eddie Mulder's W est Coast Vintage Dirt Track Se r ies Round 6 : Willow S pr ings W a lt James St adi um Murphree Wins Willow in Record Time By JAMEY BLUNT WIUOW SPRINGS, CA, OCT. 23 Two hundred and forty-two participants came I to the Willow Springs oval for round six of Edd ie Mulder 's West Co ast Vintage Dirt Track in the A&A Racing/Johnson Ca ms Super Senior class. As they lined up fo r the main, though, it was Moore who had the fastest lap time from the heats . On the start, Tom Howard caught everyone sleeping an d sh o t to the front. Horton was inching away, putt ing in his best lap However, th e ho rs e po w e r o f Alzo la's C &Jfr am ed Trium p h too k Howard's le ad away. W ith I 1/2 laps in th e books, Moo re too k over seco nd, wh ile Ke n Bar r ow was pr essuri ng How ard as well . Meanw hile. at the front, Alzola put in a 24 .26-seco nd lap as he pulled away fro m the field to win by a full-straightaway lead . Lap three saw Clyde 600cc main event. as National ride rs Johnny De nnen take over third. with Rick Reed fourth a nd Ro n Moore fifth . Ho rto n went on to victory - his first ofth ree for the day. Murph ree. Shau n Russell and Steve Murray came out to try to de thro ne Jimmy Wood. All Se ries. The fo ur Pro hea t races kicked off the program, giving the 27 Pros in attendance a fresh track for a shot at one of the 14 spots in the main, followed by the remaining22 heat races. By lap tw o , Mickey Alzola has be en unstoppable late ly eyes were on Wood and Murphree, as thei r lap ti mes w e re th r-ee - hundredths o f a seco nd Johnny Murphre e won the Digger Helm Pro 600cc main event aboard a Ron Wood Ratax and set a ne w trac k re cord in the p rocess at the penultimate rou nd of Edd ie Mulde r's We st Coast Vintage Dirt Track Se ries. apart, as each wo n their hea t race. Launching into t urn one, Murp hree put the Ro n Wood Rotax up front , w ith Wood second, Russell third and Rick Hocking in fourth. A big m istake by Hocking and A.J. Herrera saw Murray move up to fourth . By lap three , Mur phree and Wood had a full straightaway on the pack , with Wood dogging Murphree, looking for a mistake. Th is lap also saw He rr e ra go dow n in turn thr ee. O n lap four of IS, Murphree set a new track reco rd of 2 1.0 I seconds, eclipsing Wood 's reco rd of 21.4 2 se con ds . By lap five, Alex Wood , in his debu t rid e o n the Ron Wood Yamaha . was getting used to his new moun t; he moved up to fourt h and set sail for Russell. Abrams fell just two points shy o f the runne r- u p spot, w ith 154 points. Aust in Ray ( 127 po ints) and Cody Espudo ( 125 points) made up the remainder of the to p five. After ma king t he jump fr o m 80s t o t he 125cc machine after round five, Drake Rainier went on to w in all five re maining ro und s to finish off the series w ith fourth place overall. If he had begu n t he series o n the big bike , Chad Collingwood might not have taken the title. Des p it e mis s ing the ope ning rou nd , Collingwoo d rode we ll, but Rainier proved to be a thr eat late in the se ries with a five-round win st re ak. Da nie l Armstron g made all 10 ro unds to tally a points to tal wo rthy of t he runner-up spot, but the first round killed him, as his mota score ea rned him just nine points; he finished with 134 points to Co llingwood's 185- Chad Collinwood rode nine of the 10 rounds of the Perris Hot Summer Nights Se ries and sco red the 125cc Beginner title. 36 point total.
