'santi County Fairgrounds Mataya Closes the Season, FUEL By DAN BROTEN CAMBRIDGE, MN, SEPT. 25 ake Mataya rode to victory in both the 505cc Pro and Open Pro classes to finish off the Minnesota District 23 season. Ridmg his Crown Fund ing Yamaha, Mataya clinched the 505cc Pro champio nship for the second year in row. T his yea r, his closest competitor was Kevin An derson , w ho won t he Open Pro championship . These two yo ung AMA Pro Sport riders have set the mark for the rest of the Pro riders in the area by runn ing fast and riding smart. The On Track Promotions crew prepared the track to the liking of all the ride rs . Th ere w as no sign of the usua l Cambridge blue groove. The track was wate red w ell in advance and graded and then dragged w ith a weighted-down pin rake. The surface ap pe are d to be cushion like, whic h a llo w e d riders to run a higher line than normal at this track. The more ex perienced riders found it ve ry fast. Onl y a coup le of bikes went do wn du ring the night, and the crashes co uld no t be attributed to track condi tions . T he late September night was unseasonably wa rm , and the stage w as set for a great evening o f Minneso ta dirt tra cking for th e 173 entries on hand . Prior to the Open Pro ma in event, the trac k was dragged for the last time o f the nig ht. Heat winners Mataya and Eric Brouhard we re first to line up, followed by the rest of th e sta rstudded field o f r ide rs t hat inclu d e d five fo r m e r Pro st ate champ ion s. At the nag, Mataya took off, followed by Honda r iders Anderson, Chad Sparks and Josh Koch.
