AHRMA Vin tage Trials Two Rivers Raceway The Hill and the &~'b~¥ ROPHY MILLIKEN, CO, SEPT. 18 n da y two of the AHRMNTwo Rive rs Vint age Na tional weekend, they managed to squeeze in a trial late Saturday afternoon, just as the Post-Vintage Motocross was en ding. With more than SO riders signed up, the trials masters laid out a 10section loop of varied terrain, including a hill and a gully that some will remember for some time to come. The hill was fairly steep and long, with a short approach. and the lack of traction in the loamy soil left quite a few holes and left a number of riders stuck , as many "frved" on its slope . The gully wasn't much to look at - shallow with sheer sides, but very tight turns on the wall face that turned out to be a real challenge until the second or th ird loop wore a line on the faces of the wall. It. too . took its share of fives. Scores on the day were rather high, as the class winners averaged 37. but 19s were the lucky numbers. turned in by 18year-o ld Mode rn Classic Expert rider Keith Win eland, Rigid Intermediate Rob Stickler and Modern C lassic Novice Bo b Richter, with each easily taking the ir re spective class w ins . Richte r was chased by Bo b Gamer and Donna Kelly; the three finished just one point apart at the end of the day. Travis Stevens squeaked out a win over ls -year-cld Sarah Duke by o ne point in one of the closest battles of the day, in the Mode rn Classic Intermedi ate class; th ey scored 43 a nd 44 , respectively, in the day's largest class. Another outstanding ride was the one turned in by 72-year-old John Knapp. who came all the way fro m New York to card the low score of the event, with 14 for the day, obliterating the Pre mier Ughtw eight Novices. This guy had also ridden his trials bike in the cross country event the day before! We should all be in such shape. Another standout, Classic Novice Danny Messmore , trounced this author with a 20. turn ing in the only "clean" card for the ent ire event . They're making these Novices awfulfy tough lately. After th ree loo ps. the sun was dropping behind the Rockies. The event finished up incident-free, even though some joked about perhaps needing lights to finish. As usual, it is atways fun to see these old marques of the past such as GRM, Greeves, BSA and James. some so nicely restored that it almost seems a shame to ride them. But they like to gel out and have fun, too. eN O RESUL TS PR EM l/W N O V: I. .fohn Knapp 2. David Pierc e ; 3. JIfTl Sprague. P REM : l/W IN T: I. Rob Poole; 2. Don Kelley PR EM l/W EX.: I .
