OOOBER 27, 2004 • CYCLE NE WS The Grand Venegas Victorious at The Grandi By RYAN EVANS INDUSTRY HILLS, CA, SEPT. 8 F o r m e r Nationa l C hampion Ch ar lie "T he Edge " Venegas was ilawless in ail fove of his races and took the Scratch main-even t win at The G rand in Ind ustry Hills. Venegas lined up on the pole in the Scratch main , but Shaw n McConnell was the first to leave the line . Ve negas st ili managed to beat McCon ne ll into turn o ne and secure the inside line. McConnell was pushed wide . along with Du kie Ermolenko , which allowed D e n ny Scopellite to take second. Meanwhile, Venegas opened up an insurmountable lead in just one lap. Venegas c r uised to an easy victory. but there was plenty of act ion behind him, as first McCon nell a nd then Ermolenko passed Scop ellite. McConnell was able to hold on to second, w ith Ermolenko settling for third and Sco pellite finishing fourth . Nate Perkins began the Division On e heats with a so lid victory over McConnell and Justin Boyle . Ve negas w on his he at ea sily, over impressive rookie Daria Galvin and former Na tional C h a mp io n Bob by Sc h w a rt z . Ermolenko completed round one wi th a win over Scopellite. Ro und two started with Venegas getting his second win of the night by beating Errnole nko and Ga lvin. Boyle showed a lot o f poise by holding off constant pressure (rom McConnell to w in the next race . The seco nd round concluded with Scopellite beat ing Perkins . McConn ell scored a victory ove r Scopellite to begin the final ro und of heats. Venegas made it t hree in a row by beating Perkins and Brad Sauer. Erm o lenko to ok his sec ond win of the night , ahead of Shaun Harmatiuk and Boyle , in the final heat race . Venegas romp ed to his four-th st ra ight victory in the first se mi to transfer to the main, and Scopelllte's second-place finish secured him a spot as we ll. Ermolenko won th e sec ond semi , with McConnell finishing second ; bot h earned spots in the main. Stev e Murray jumped into the lead on the th ird start and brought a halt to all of the drama wit h a runaway victory. japan's Hideaki Ota finished second , Michae l Hernandez was th ird, and Skyler Greyson finished fourth. Carl Gazafy blasted into the lead at th e sta rt of the D ivis io n Three ma in but w as hotl y pursued by Steve Dziadus Jr., w ho gave Gaza fy all he cou ld hand le fo r three laps . Gazafy left some room o n t he inside e nter ing the final c orner, bu t Dzia dus squa ndered the o pportunity w hen he slid 0 ((. By the reaction of the cro wd, it will definitely be back. T he crowd was mesmerized by the high ~f1ying antics of K Lovelace and Slade Waltman as they com yle pleted jumps between manufactured ramps . Sometimes it takes a bac kstage pass to get the rea l story on how to pull off a successful show. It turn s ou t there was very litt le time (or ramp setup d uring the afternoon, and the riders we re only allowed two practice jumps before the program started. To make matters worse. th e South Dako ta winds picked up to 2S mph as show time nea red . The ramp placement was a little too close (or the bigge r tricks at first. but the riders would have to make due. The night's program c on sisted o ( tw o rounds , the first being an exhibition to show the crowd what fre estyle is all abo ut.
