FAST T IME: Jake Tackitt (Kaw) . New England Trail Riders Association Round 10: Stateline Riders Motorcycle Club Stateline Hare Scrambles Jalbert Conquers the Empire State By T.J. SWISTRO HOOSICK, NY SEPT. 12 , M att [albert continued his domination of the New England Hare Scrambles Series at round lO in upsta te New York. Th e weather was again superb. Rain earl ier in the week left the trac k slick yet incred ibly tacky. wh ich proved to be both an asset an d d etrime nt to th e 313 riders w ho e ntered. Th irt een Pro rid ers lined up for an eight -lap race, w ith lap t im es averaging aro und 15 m inutes. John Day Sr. jumped ou t to an early lead o n his Pr o Ci rcuit Susp e ns io n-eq uip ped YZ 2 5 0. grabbing an awesome ho les hot ahead of Jeff Staples , aboard his Yl250. and GNCC Pro rider Br ian Law so n, aboard his Ronnie 's C ycl es YZ450F. However, somewhere w ithin the first half of the loop. Day lost his front brake and just wasn't able to attack the challeng ing track the way he wanted to . This tumed the lead over to lawson , w ho had no problem accepting t hat responsibility. as he sto r me d his way to a 34 second lead by the end of lap one. Wes Clarke. aboard a Rob in Allsop-sponsored Yl 250. was now runn ing in se cond, followed by Matto Cycle's Billy Kingand Cycle Express's Jim Senecal. Coming around on lap three, Lawso n was still in control, but series po ints leade r Jalbert was now in second. Lawson, Jalbert and Clarke completely checked out from the rest of the class and had a remarkable three-way ba ttle 80 going for the lead . Midway t hrough the race , Lawson suddenly dropped out o f the to p three and was run ning about seventh. This left Clar ke and RER Motorcity 's Jalbe rt all alone up fro nt. Jalbert slowly began to creep away from Cla rke with a bout t wo laps t o go , and he wound up cruising to the finish with a co mfo rt ab le I:44-seco nd lead . How eve r, th e real su r prise ca me w he n Bob Sant he so n , N ETRA's und e rdog a nd las t yea r's eve nt winne r, sudde nly fo und himself in the middle of an all-out battl e with Clar ke for second. At the e nd of lap o ne, Santh eson had been forced to pit prematurely to remove a broken handguard, so when he started out on lap two , he was around 10th, and wi th all the e xcitement up fro nt, he went unnoticed. But each lap, he was picking off a couple of guys at a time , until all of a sudden , on t he last lap , he was right o n Clarke's rear tire . During that last lap. Clarke tangled with a lapped rider, and Cycle Connection's Santheso n sneaked by him , but Clarke wouldn't give up that easily. He qu ickly remounted and charged bac k up to the Spect ro -spo nso re d Santhe so n and , push ing t he envelope in a multil ined section , he retoo k second place. The two continued to keep the pressure o n each other all the way to t he finish , where Clarke jus t nudged out Santh e so n by t hree seconds fo r second overall . By MIKE VANCil UVERMORE, CA, SEPT. 12 B ase d o n the num ber o f com peti tors he raced against and his succes ses in multiple motes. young Kawasaki joc key Joe y N otaro was by far the o utstandi ng star at the second round o f the 23rd annual C MC Tran s-Cal Motocro ss Nati onals Series , hosted by Mot o -We st Racing at Club Moto just outside Livermore, California. In four rnotos , the rising star o btained three ho lesho ts and won all four contests - and these mo tos were extra-la p m o to s, compared to most in the program. In his first event of the day. Notaro faced 15 other 125cc Junior riders and was beaten off the line by Ho nda ride r Larry Aze vedo , who nab be d an excellen t ho les hot. By lap t wo. No taro had found a way ar ou nd Azevedo o n the "su pe rcross cou rse o n a hillside" (w hich best describes the Club Moto facility], and the finish order was set . In the second outing fo r th is class , Notaro too k a page o ut of Azeved o 's play book and beat him off the line and into as well as out of t.he firs t co r ne r. Notaro ne ve r had t o loo k back, as he distanced himself fro m the secon dplaced Azeved o. Th e other mo to s in w hich Notaro sta rted (turni ng tw o ho les ho ts into two moto wins) were for the 125cc 5choo lboy class. in which he faced six other riders. Again, the rider doing the chasing and the waiting fo r th e mistake that never came was Azeved o , o n his Honda. Fo ur motos and fo ur wins fo r Notaro , and four second places for Azevedo. Another standout performance was turned in by Mini rider Austin Howell, who fUriousty attacked the course on his rapid 80 cc Suzuk i and came away the winner in three different classes . In two of the three classes . he faced six other capable riders , while in the Su pe rm ini class he had but one r ider t o battle . He obtained five ho lesho ts and six mota victories. These six motos were divided into four five-lap events and two four- lap events, and it doesn't take a mathematics pro fessor to note t hat 40th Anniversary equals 28 laps on a co u r se t hat is quit e cha llenging. lach Andrade w as the only rider to best How e ll off the sta rt gate , in the first effort o f the day for both o f the m.
