EVE·NTS WORCS Round 9: Bull Hollow Raceway Neither Rain, Nor Hail, Nor Sleet Nor Snow Stopped Morros From Running With the Big Dogs Bv DAVE BROSIUS MONTICELLO, UT, SEPT. 11-12 \ A /hen V V tw o the W O Re S crew comes to Utah. things are almost guaranteed: great racing and wet weather. The rain started Friday night and continued throughout Saturday, with a full-b lown winter storm moving in to end the first day of racing. However, even with th e rain, hail. sleet and snow, the event was one of the best in the series to date. The hospitality of the Bull Hollow staff and the great off-road terra in challenged all wh o swung a leg over the ir trusty racing mach ines. After the rain on Sat urday, Sunday' s part icipants e nco unt e re d slic k, m uddy conditions that had most riders happy to be on a 2S0 o r 4S0 at the start of the combined Over 30 A, Over 40 A and Supermin i event . Who says you need a big bike to run with the big dogs? Not Josh Morros. It was a thrill to w atch Mor ros , ab oard his MaxxisfTeam DH I Kawasaki Supermini, move th rough the pack of Expert riders on full-sized mot orcycles, picking off so me of the best Vet racers in the coun try to finish first in class and an amazing second o verall, be hind O ver 30 Expe rt Eric Ducray. Con sidering th e fact that Morros had to stop for gas and goggles while the others went the distance, it w as a heroic day at the races for Morr os and his famity. In Saturday's 2S0cc C race, Albert Montoya, o n a KX2S0 , and Christopher Nesswood , aboard his RM2S0 Suzuki, raced wheel to wheel and bar to bar to the bitter end in the o ne ho ur- p lus e ve nt . W hen t he c heckered flag waved, Flagstaff, Arizona 's Montoya claimed the num be r-o ne position, beating Nesswood by on ly seven seco nds . T hird went to Randy Menighan from Lake Havasu, mak ing it an allArizona podium. In the 12Scc C cl ass . Yama ha jockey Jonathan Davis showed his re ar w heel to the class as he sprinted to the top pos ition o n this ever-c hanging raceco urse. Behind Davis cam e the battle of the KTMs, as Alex Mecham scored second-place honors over Tony Ge lso ne from Henderson, Nevada. The 2S0F A class was case of "old age and treachery vs . yo uth and enth usias m , " a s fortysome t hing fire ma n N e d Lo w erre from Glenda le, Arizona, tried to chase down "t he Kid," 16-year-old Kawasak i jockey Justin So ule. Lowe rre gave it all he had, but his Moose Racing RM2S0Z came up just 20 seconds off the pace of Soule's Team Gree n ride . Both riders finished the br utal race w ith eyes full of mud and sand afte r successfully negotiating th e tough course laid out by Sean Red ish and his cr ew of Texans . Since th is was the first-ever WORCS event at Bull Hollow Raceway, many racers w ere a bit nervous about the facility but after tw o days of , great racing, all the y could ask wa s, ':Are we co ming back next year?" Well, the answer is yes - with more trails to challenge the competitors and a "ve ry friend ly" mot ocross track to excite the many spectators who were in attendance. See you all next year!
