In the early days, 78 me n died here in gun fights before the first man died of natu ral ca uses. Wit h th is to ugh and rou gh history in mind, the Bushwha cke rs designed a Desert GP to live up to th e history of Pioche w it h a r 0mile loo p aroun d t he tow n, with portions running th ro ugh the City stree ts, old mining cam ps, the fore st and the now -famou s "Log ja m" (a se ct ion t hat se ve ral of t he c lub me m bers designed , com prised of 40 yard s of bu rned logs for the riders to try to negotiate) . T he Novice class had the op po rt un ity to race in front of all the Experts and Amateurs, w hile they waited for their o pportunity to race th e streets of Pioche before heading o ut onto the desert sec tion of the race . Eldrid ge jum pe d out early to a sizable lead and put it on cru ise control. Wadsworth att acked all race long, and his e fforts paid off w he n he got the opportunity to ma ke a pa ss for the o ve ra ll; however, Wa dswort h fell short , making a couple of mistakes in the final mile of the race and letting Justin Bicknell make a pass. First ove rall Novice we nt to Eldrid ge, Bicknell picked up se cond aboard his Honda, and Wadswort h earned a hard -fo ught first in the 125cc class and t hird overall Novice . In the Mini race , all the 80cc an d 60cc Expe rts and Amateurs waged war for one hour on a 7-mile mini-course. The Supe rmini Experts showed the cro wd w hy they are the future of MRAN . T he battle started on the streets o f Pioche , with Zach Watson drawing his guns first, a bscond ing w it h a ho le shot and le adin g the competition through the streets. Once the pack hit the de sert, it was all-o ut wa r betw ee n the Yamaha-mounted Wadsworth and KTM riders T 78 Look at the Old GUys Go! Curtis Bradley, Justin Wallis and Wats on . In the first seven miles of the course , the lead changed nine times. When the dust sett led, the first four Supermini ride rs finished within 30 seconds of each other. Earning top hono rs was Wadsworth, w ho was first overa ll and first Superm ini; Bradley finished seco nd, and Watson grabbed third. By MARK WOLBRINK ELKHART LAKE, WI, SEPT. 11·12 A t the final round of the Superbi kers2 Sprint ~ce Series, every rider knew he had o ne more chance in 2004 - one more chanc e to lock up a class championship or just to finally make a pod ium finish. After nearly a full seaso n of racing, the c1aybased dirt sect ion at the Briggs and Stratton Motorpl e x has been a n ad d it io n mostl y welc ome d by the riders, The spectators love it. It loo ks like the cornerworke rs are herding cats w hen the pack goes through o n th e first lap. The road racers are still a bit bo thered by the du st in their tee th, bu t th e dir t wa s gra de d smooth for Saturday's races and a blue gro ove was starting to for m ea rly in practice. It was a nar ro w gro ove , but berms were available , so the moto cross-inclined had a quick way aro und the as phalte rs, Satu rd ay's ma in ev e nt was th e Vet Ope n ma in . john Alt man and Da vid Dupre y have be en raci ng e ach othe r all sea son , and le ss t he n th re e championship points separate d the two. Duprey took the holes hot and led Te rry Vestal , Altman and We s Orloff up the hill. Altman had done just eno ug h math t o kno w th is w as not w he re he needed to be for the championshi p, so he qu ickly worked his w ay around Vestal. More than hal f th e race passe d in that order, Duprey le ading the day and Altm an le ad ing fo r the year.
