Living close to this race sit e , the Yarnaha-mounted Hawkins was on hand to talk to many riders and fans on Saturday and after the race on Sunday. He is o ne of the most personable racers in the off -road business, and he's as nice and approachable as can be . He is also one of the fastest cats in the nation , currently leading the AMA National Enduro Series. Located about 160 miles from the coast, Clinton, South Carolina. Is on the red -day-andsandy-te rrain line. The ground was hard packed . fast and technical. Woods motocross was the setup of the day, as en dless firebreaks made riders fee l like do ing a Nac-N ac eve ry onc e in a wh ile, whether they meant to or not. The race te rr ain was made up o f nice, fun, almo st man icured trail , w ith ple nty of tight , gnarly te chnical se ct ions thrown in for good measure. Run mostly in the Sumter National Forest and limited to a one -time-per-year use permit, these tra ils hold up year after year. Just like at season's e nd last year, Jason Chancey and Russell Bobbitt went hea d to head, w ith Cycle Sport of Chattanooga-backed Cha ncey winning the tie brea ker to take first in the M class, while Cycle Spec ialties-sponsored new KTM rider Bobbitt took second in the AA class. Russell said he was really happy with his new KTM 250 EXC, wh ich came straight o ut of the box only days before this race. Step hen Edmonson put in a strong ride to take third , while Trey Wellborn was on the gas, round ing out the top frve finishers . Legend Mike Melton of 1970s and 19BOs ISDE, SE&TRA and National Enduro off-road racing fame still has the fire and certainly has the speed. Bum ing a chec k, Melton dropped a mere 10 points en route to taking the 250cc A class. Using the full start cont rol checking system, there was very little timekeep ing invotved. W ith seve n re sets and mor e than 65 ground miles, the course was prefect in length and executio n. With t hi s year 's race in th e bag , the Greenville Endur o Riders Association let it be known that the efforts of the U.S. Forest Service Rangers, the law-e nfo rce me nt office rs and th e Whitmire Rescue Squad, who made this a safe and en joyabl e e ve nt. we re muc h apprecia te d. To cap it all off, GERA was happy to ma ke a $2500 donat ion to the Medic ally Fragile Childr en's fund . eN trrns BROWN JUG ENDURO CUNTON, SOUTH CAROUNA RESULTS: 5EPTIMIER 5, Top SETRA rider Jason Chancey heads into the last section of the day en route to first place in the AA class. in the 6Scc (O·B) event.
