Halfway th rough lap two, Mart inez mane uvered around Lis to take o ver se cond and started to close the gap to Pihokke n. Marti nez managed to catch Pihokken w ith a late -braking maneuver into t urn seven and challenged him in every corner t here afte r. The two rod e side by side down the straightaways, wit h Ma rtinez attempting to pass Pihokken around the o utside of every corner, but Pihokken was able to hold his advantage and kee p the lead. On the w hite-nag lap, Pihokke n was all by himself out front after Martinez crashed in the tu rn t hree/fou r ch icane . He was ab le to re enter the ra ce , but he co uldn ' t regain his position. Piho kken co ntinue d to lead the final laps , with out challe nge . He crossed the finish line with a big, big gap over second-placed Lis. Laf ferty has been racing the Nationa l Enduro Series this year and doing well, but in the sand and trees of jersey, he was an odd s-on favorite to take top o 40th Anniversary honors . Rich's brother Jack Lafferty fiiled in the number-three spot . A technical er ro r on the part of th e club had o ne checkpo int clock se t o ne minute early, w hich res ulted in two checkpoint scores being thrown out. This left Rich tied with Bradway at six po ints apiece; the tie was broken o nty by Rich's score of 404 emergency seconds to Bradway's 40S, which netted Rich the Grand Champ ion title.
