Dean Tow nse nd slid into some slick stuff but managed to save it in front of the fans. Richard Taylor charged from a midpack start, passing Rongstad fo r second. Taylor pressu re d but co uldn't pass Oshiro. Taylo r nab be d the mota-two holes hot. Oshiro sailed over the bridge and passe d Taylor, taking the lead to t he checkers. Taylor put in a fine ride. but O shiro appears to be in control of the sum mer ser ies. In th e first O ve r 38 Inte r me diat e mo te. Arnie Davis sho t into an immedia te lead. Eric "Raise the Bar" Barr was hot on his fe nder. Barr mad e a n exciti ng pass. jump ing a sel d o m trave le d infield do uble and putt ing the blockpass on Davis. Bar r wo n moto one, ahead of Davis. Dan Caneva held third. "I stayed inside in the chop py stu ff [as the tum came up, so as to not push out Davis]," Barr said. "I like to ride clean but make a pass stick." In mote two, Davis put the power down on the 4S0ce Hond a. Pat Samud io, who 'd had a difficult first moto , was now in se cond. Mark Jones got his best start in a long time and was running third. Barr nee ded to catch Davis. Craig McCarley waited for a miscue by Barr. Caneva was the caboo se of the pack, but he moved into position be hind Barr and made the pass but got caught up behind Lare Waldrop. When Waldrop we nt wide, Bar r pulled an inside move , but Caneva came right back, le aving Bar r t o co nte nd with Waldrop. Meanwhile, Davis and Samudio were side by side thro ugh the rhythm sect ion . Samud io aired it ou t for the lead after t he last set o f bleach e rs . Barr gob ble d up Wald ro p. but it t o o k two mo re laps to get aro und Caneva. Barr caught Davis at an optio n dou ble. Barr nailed the jump and tagged Davis, nudging him a tad as if to say, "Stay back." Davis stayed right on his hee ls. Bar r slid w ide before the "H unter Dodge" bridge; Davis knifed inside and across Barr's line. Davis led through the w hoo ps. Barr wen t w ide again at the cattle tower; Davis held the inside but slid wide to throw a block move on Barr. T hen, half a lap later, Barr nailed the midsection dou ble , but Davis cut back in just ahead by half a bikelength. Then, in the whooped red zone, Davis slid over to block Barr, but Barr quickly changed direction s to jump the do uble but it was Davis at the to p of the ramp by a knobby.
