CMC Tr a ns- Cal Series S out h Round I: Glen Helen Raceway Park PHOTOS BY JO HN BETHEA The Alessi B~s Are Back in Town By JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 29 ne might figure tha t when he got home from his National Champions hip and Pro racing debuts back east , Mike Alessi would have calmed down and mellowed out. But con troversy seems to follow the Alessis like a storm cloud : They hadn't even finished practice at the opening ro und of the 23rd annual Trans-Cal Series w hen there was a dispute o n and off the track w ith Kyle Partridge . C MC officialsnipped it in the bud as qu ickly as possible. However, things just seem to be simmering since the "Believe The Hype " coming-out party in Minnesota . On the racetrack, the e lder Alessi brother sho wed he's as fast as ever and twice as slippery against his So Ca I foes , charging to the w inne rs' circle in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro events. Mean while, his yo unger brother Je ff scored a fourth in th e 250cc Pro contest after starting midpack in the 20-m inute , slngle-moto race . The 2S0cc contest began with Mike taking the lead early and not looking bac k. If he had , he 'd have see n Nevada 's Jim m y Ne lso n charging ha rd on his Yamaha for the first lap, only to spill back to sixt h on the second trip aro und the Glen He len Raceway circ uit . That left Dragon/IMS Honda rider Jeff Willoh to take over the att e m pt to cat ch Mike , but he , too, slippe d back a bit , and on lap fo ur, Hon da rider Dytan Lord took charge of the runner-up spot for the remaining 10 laps. While Willoh began to fa de , eve ntuall y finis hing fift h , Nelson charged back to garner third by the end, with Jeff Alessi in his wake. Carlos Gonzales stole a lot of attent ion in the 20-minute 12Scc Pro event, grabb ing the early lead from Mike and holding it for more than a lap. However, it wasn't long before the Suzuki rider was yanked back to second place by Mike. T hen Gonzales s lip pe d to third, be hi nd Partridge, on lap fo ur. The to p three stayed tha t O Becker 's w eekend was going great until he saw o ne o f his favorite riders go down in the first mota and w ind up tra ppe d under his bike . Becke r told his dad that he was going to he lp, but th e n he saw tha t ride r finally get o ut from under his bike , a little shake n but o kay, and ge t back o n his bike and take off again. Becker w as worrie d abo ut tha t rider but was to ld that he wo uld be o kay. When it was time for him to th ink abo ut his ow n race, Becker lined up in th e midd le , ready to go, just w aiting for the gat e to drop . W he n it d id, he was o ff and run ning in the midd le of th e pack. He charged hard, never letting off th e gas. no ma tt er wh o o r w ha t w as in fro nt o f him . Wo rki ng his w ay t h rough t he o ther r ide rs . Bec ke r had his eye on KTM rider [ace Carlton, w ho 's in first place in the se ries . Car lto n knew t ha t Becke r w as co mi ng , so he ch a rged on ahead . Becker d idn't give up, but he also kne w th at be hind him we re KTM riders Ca ge Frazie r and Gunn ar Ho rn , an d they w ante d th e same t h ing he d id : to w in. All fo ur charged har d, ne ver giving up. When the checke red flag flew, 70 w ay for the next four laps. At halfway. Nelson came burst ing into vie w. ta king th ird from Go nzales on lap eight and then second from Partridge three laps later, and held it to the end. Top Sportsman honors were shared by two other 16-year-old Inte rme d iates seeking a bit mo re ex pe rience before making the Pro plunge. Nuevo . California's Jar re d Brow ne rode two twin -moto sweeps of the 125cc Intermediate and I25cc Schoolboy classes and seemed destined for a third class victo ry after acing the first 2S0cc Int ermediat e moto before his RM spit him 0(( whi le he was leading mota two. Grabbing his chance, Henderson, Nevada's Michael Parker, a two -class champion in the Trans-Cal Se rie s last year, eked out the victory w it h a 3-2 show ing. Lo cal favorite Jare d Minor, another ta le nted 16-year-old who will wait until next year to tum pro, won th e mota, but poor suspension and a first-moto seventh left him third overall, behind Derek Murphy, who tied Par ke r's five m o to points but lost the win with a second-moto third. Parker w rapped up his seco nd overall with twin eN wins in the Four-Stroke class. GUN HELEN RACEWAY PARK SAN BERNARDINO , CAU FORNIA RESULTS: AUGUST 29, 2004 (ROUND 1) 50 BEG: I.
