In th e first mota, Susan Smith got o ut to an early le ad and nat ou t left the pack behind . Katie "Shaky" Wharton quickly moved into the second- place posi tion but fell short of Smith 's pac e and had to settle fo r second . Kat ie 's yo unge r sister jessie battled with Sierra Shirley fo r most of the mota, and o n th e last lap jessie finally got by for third place . In th e second m o ta , Sm ith o nc e aga in blasted out into the lead and never even loo ked back . Katie was running in a lo ne ly se cond place but was losing several seconds per lap to Smith. jessie was working on the thi rd -place po sition again an d alm o st los t it wh en s he a nd lisa Moor e collided , but jessie kept o n go ing, wh ile Moore 's bike got kicked out of gea r. Smith took the win, Katie took second and jessie was th ird. Smith ( I- I) took the overall win. Katie (2-2) took second. an d Jess ie (3-3) finished third . Moore (S-4) finished fo urt h overall. and Annie Schuster (6-S) took fifth. Smith continued her dom inance in the O ldTim ers division , ta king the o verall w in in th e Amateur class . Del Latham was the onl y ride r in the Expert class and kept it upright to sco re his class win. PORTLAND, OR, AUG. 19 F RESULTS Por/la nd 'n/ernational Raceway By JUSTIN o rme r Nation al Ch ampion Ch ris Manchester sco red a d ram atic victory in the Scratch main wi th a pass in th e final co mer at the Grand at Indus try H ills. The first attem pt to run the ma in ended in a heap in t u rn two when Bobby Kri ps went do wn, leaving Randy DiFrancesco nowhere to go but into the fallen rider. Both riders were down for sev e ral m inutes ; DiFrancesco w as able to make the restart, but Krips had to leave the trac k with assistance . Charlie Venegas, w ho entered the ma in even t undefeated , launched into th e lead on the r estart a nd w as succe ssful in ho lding o ff Manches ter for two laps, but his luck changed when he next en tered turn o ne : Venegas hit a hole . which fo r c e d h im w ide a n d allowed Manch ester to run up the inside on the back straight. Venegas w as able to use the outs ide to mainta in th e lead as th ey took th e w hite nag, but Manchester tried the low line on the back stra ight again. Manchester's inside line pro ved to be superior. and he surg ed into th e lead on the final corner and b eat Venegas t o th e chec kered flag by inches. DiFrancesco finished th ird , and Krips w as credited with fo urt h. Shawn McConnell to o k th e lead in the first semi and w as we ll on his w ay to the ma in when a rough spot on the track forced him wide and allow ed first Krips and th en DiFranc e sco to go by on the inside and tak e th e two transfers to th e ma in. In the other sem i, Venegas w as victo r io us again, and Mancheste r 's sec o nd place allowed him to take a place in th e main as w e ll. McConne ll scored a close v ict o ry over Shaun Harrnartuk in th e Scratch Consolation , w it h Robbie Sau e r finish ing t h ird and justi n Boyle being cr edited wit h fo urt h. Tim Gomez made winning the Division Two ma in event lo o k e asy fo r th e se con d st raigh t w ee k. Japan's Hideaki Ora finished sec o nd. Rohn Zellner was third, and Brian Starr finished fourth . Mike Boyle fought o ff all th e ch allenges that C arl Gazafy could muster to win the Divisio n Three main e vent. Th e two rid ers ba tt led throughou t t he four-lap race , but Boyle was able to hold on for th e w in, ahead of Gazafy. N athan Sme lser w a s third , and Greg Vandemore finished fourth . Both Y uth main eve nts e nded prematurely o due to crashes. Ricky Wells w as victo rio us, over jason Ramirez , in Division One after Ramirez fell. Fast Fridays Speedway Gold Country Fairgrounds Bast Bangs Out Fast Frida s Winl AUBURN,CA ,AUG.20 T .. he 1998 SRA United States National Speed way Champion, Bart "Simpso n" Bast. survived a harrowing first -turn collision with Chris Kerr to take his th ird Fast Fridays Scratch ma inevent victory of t he season. Starting from lane two , Bast was the quickest off the line an d en te re d th e first turn slightly ahead of pole sitt e r Kerr. Bobby "The Blaze " Hedden and Chad Felicio completed the field and sta rted from lanes three and four, res pecti vely. Kerr, who was fortunate en ough to draw th e ins id e start ing pos ltlon . conversely had th e misfort une of having to operate on a teammate's bike, due to a broken clutch on his own. "I was riding Bill Hiles' bike . and that thing y is set up way d ifferent than mine, and I had trouble getting used to it," Kerr explained . Despite Bast's slight adva ntage off the line . the two ride rs came together in t he ape x of the first turns and had a collisio n that was audible from the stands . Amaz ingly, bot h riders remained up right , and as Bast careened off in 40th Anniver sary th e right d irection , ma intain ing the race lead , Kerr was left sp inning like an errant compass pointer, eventually facing th e infield. "Boy, you couldn't have drive n a need le into my butt w ith a sledgehammer afte r we got together in the first tu rn ," Bast de clared after the race . Kerr 's troub les we re n' t o ver quite ye t. as Hedden w as unable to avo id him complet ely and clipped his bac k t ire , ending his night o f racing. Hedden, w ith Felicia in tow, w en t afte r Bast, but both ride rs sp ent the remaini ng laps chas ing a gho st , as Bas t rode smooth ly and mistake-free to Mark jo ine r' s chec ke red flag. In Handicap act ion . IO-yard handicappe r Mark Carrillo led the first two laps. but he was unabl e to ho ld off 30 -yarde r T.J. Fowler. w ho took his fourt h Handicap main win of the season . Fowler ended up winning by a big. comfortab le margin, due to his com petition literally falling off the pace . Felicia , w ho started from the 50. was the first to go wh e n he fell off in lap three. Lone 40- yard starter Ker r, t e st ing out that backup jawa , slid dow n in tum two on lap four, leaving the runner-up spot to Bast . Hedden was th ird, and fourt h place went to Carrillo. Divis io n Tw o veteran Bill Warnoc k beat fellow IO-yard starter Kell Kerrigan off th e line in the Division Two final and held on to lead it the entire way for his first ma in-even t V ictory of the season.
