D ill (Y SANDERSON BINGHAMTON, NY, AUG. 20-22 T he Broome-Tioga Sports Center, commonly referred to as "t he Greatest Spectator Course in America, " and H urd M ot o r spo r t s hosted round 10 of the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship Series on August 22. As is traditional with most tracks on the AHA Pro circuit, two days of Amateur races were held prior to the National. The Amateur racing started on Friday and was top-notch, as is usual for this ann ual event. Unfort unatety, racing was cut short two motes into the second half o f the prog ram when a large thund erstorm hit the area and dumped 2 1/2 inches of rain in 40 minutes . Prom oter Tom Hurd had no cho ice but to ca nc e l th e re maining portion of the Amateur program, as we ll as Saturday's Pro practice and qualifiers, so that he and his trac k crew could get to work on the r acecourse to get it in sh ap e fo r Sunday's National. Hon da pilot Pat Barton led the start of the Over 2S Exp ert m o t o, followed b y Kurt McMillen of Wapp Falls, New Yor k, ve te ra n Dag Boyese n, Rob Stilwell and Robert Hayes. McMillen overtook Barton for the lead in the seco nd turn; Bart on was relegated to second , and t he n to third by the hard -charging Boyesen , w ho moved into the ru nne r-up slot just be fore the pack we nt int o the fro nt r hythm se ctio n. Sti lw e ll, Ha yes and Sea n Skutn ik were fo urth through sixth . Just afte r the start of lap two, Stilwell got by Barton for thir d, w hen the leade rs beg an ascending the hill t owa rd th e famou s Bro ome-Tioga t ree rums, Boyesen's Ho nda spun out, and Stilwell, Barton and Hayes all advanced. Boyesen's mistake relega ted him all the way back to fifth and pretty much ensured McMillen wou ld take the mot a win. Boyesen put his head down and began charging , and he quic kly made his way aro und Haye s and then Barton to ta ke third befor e he ran o ut of time .
