S uper mot o USA No r-Cal Championship Series Round 4: Areo Arena Motorfest PHOTOS BY BRED SAUN DERS No Sightseeing Allowed in Supermoto Vet Class By BRETT SAUNDERS 5AC~ENTO,CA,AUG. 15 H iss Rac ing an d Sup ermot o USA join ed force s to put on a mas sive Supe rmo to event at the Arco Are na in Sacramento, California. Fourteen classes of Super motos raced on the innovative indoor /o utdoo r track, which wou nd through the huge pave d parki ng lo t , into and o ut of the are na. It was one of the longest tracks on wh ich the racers have competed in California, and it also had the most tech nical dirt sect io n. Ride rs started in the steamy parking lot , blasted th ro ugh tw o tw isty left-lig ht transit io ns, and then took a hard left at Motor ex Corner before descendi ng the dark and slippery co ncrete ramp d own into t he arena. O nce inside , the Super motos e ncounte red a stee p-faced jump , fo llowed by a blue grooved turn , before the y exited via anot her access ramp back into the bright sunshine outside. But that was just half a lap! Once outside, t he racers still had to negotiate a massive tabletop jum p before e ntering the fast and twisty tarmac section. It was a wildly popular and fun t rack, for both the racers and the fans. The re was awesome racing in many classes, but the Vet Expert class provided race fans with the rarest of e ndings: a down-to-the-wire, quarter-b ike leng th ph o t o fin ish. The ra ce starte d innocently enough, wit h wily Veter ans Paul Orlandi, Brian Peco re and Allen Yarrow lining up against such Vet-class newb ies as Paul Hart and Jeff Leggitt . O rlandi got his trademark holesh ot and put a huge gap o n the field. By midra ce , Orlandi had a full-straightwa y lead on his nearest compet ito r, Ste ve Ayler. Orl andi had the cruise con trol on, but it wasn't turned up quite high e nough. As t he laps passed , Orlandi continued to turn fast laps, but Ayler' s Arizona Su mmer Go ld Series Round 6: Thrasher/and MX Park The Gold Rush Continues! By MIKE PARKS GLENDALE, AI, AUG. 14 igh temperatures and a blazingArizona sun were not enough to kee p the racers at home . If you can tough out a summer series in the blazing desert , not much else will slow you up when the te mpe ratu res coo l down . A large crowd had gathered by the time the first gate dro pped. Th e y w e re t here to see some of the best racers compete on one of the most spectator-friendly track s in the state. One might t hink t here was a Pr o Wrestl ing or H NASCAR even t , judg ing by how e xcite d th e crowd was becoming. But that' s why Arizona MX is beco ming as huge as t he ot her fo ur major spo rts in this state. The races we re fast and fur ious fro m the sta rt. T he big boys of the Big Bike Open class 44 w e re just a bi t fast e r - and , unfort unate ly, O rlandi didn't have a pit board to te ll him th at Ayler was roaring up behind him like a r unaway train. As O rland i basked in th e glory of w hat he tho ught w as an easy w in, Ayle r nipped him at the chec kered flag by the slightest of margins ! In the O p en class , KTM fa cto r y p ilot Jurgen Kunzel dominated t he field , wrest ing the lead fro m loca l Supermoto Leo "Pucho" Bagnis o n the sec ond lap of the main event. Bagnis was fast, as was White Brot he rs' Steve Drew, but Kunze l w as in a class by him self, and he gra bbed the lion's share of the $7 50 0 Pro purse. Bakersfield's Josh Chisum took ho me so me gas money. as he wo n the 450 cc main on his Joke r Machine Honda, wit h Bran don Currie and local he ro Cory Call roundi ng out the 450cc podium. In the fastes t-growing Supermoto class, the 250cc Lightweight divisio n, Bobb y Fong ruled the track. He grabbed to p honors , along w ith a season's supply of Moto rex O il and Chemicals, whe n he bested Supermoto Racer Magazine's Scott Hoffman and Paul Hart .
