AMA Hot Shoe National Series Final Round: St ur gi s Fairgrounds PHOTO S BY DAVE HOE NIGIFLATTRAKF OTOS.COM Black Day in the Black Hills By DAVE HOENIG STURGIS, SD, AUG. 11 The world -fam ous Sturgis Bike Week was I the site of the last AMA Hot Shoe National of 2004 . The Sturgis Half Mile Comm inee and Checkered Flag Promotions held a Wednesday night event. The fact that the race followed a Grand Nation al race in Rapid C ity le d to a stro ng field of riders being pr esent , including GNC title contenders Chris Carr and Joe Kopp. The SOScc Pro -Sport main was the first of the night. Clayton Riggle led the 12-rider field into the first turn but was quic kly passed by Sam Halbe rt. The yo ung Was hington rider opened a big gap over Riggle. w ho was being hou nded by Shane Arndt. Three laps into the 12-lap race, Ricky Marsha ll and Jeff Steinb erger fell in turn three, forcing a restart. Halbert picked up right where he left off, and by halfway he he ld ano the r command ing le a d o ver Riggle and Arndt. Ste inberger charged to the front of a tight battl e for fourth involving Pat Schieffer, Randall Thistle , Marshall, Du ke Erickson and Matt Burge . The red came out again w he n Ellion Davis fell. Th e last res ta rt didn't change anything, as Ha lbert ra ced to t he wi n and t he Pro -Spo rt Hot Shoe National title . Riggle was secon d o n the night and in th e po int s. Arndt held on to third , with Steinb e rge r and Marsh all ro unding out the top flve. After two abo rted starts, Kopp led the starstudded 505cc Expe rt main into turn one , wit h Bryan Smith, Willie McCo y, Rob Pearson and Carr right be hind. At the e nd of lap o ne , Rob Pea rso n's Rot3X blew up , with the field tightly b unch ed beh ind ; bike s and r id ers flew in a ll directions, and w hen the d ust settl ed . Pears o n, Aaro n C ream er, Scott Sche rb , Joe Hartri ch and Doug Lawrence were all down. Cre ame r was imme diat ely t ran sported to t he hosp ital, but the po pula r Ne w Engla nd ra cer's injuries w o uld prove to be fatal. Sche rb also had to be treat ed for leg and ar m injuries. Scherb's and Longview Motocross Southard Wins Up North By JUSTIN WHARTON LONGVIEW, WA, AUG. 8 l ongview Motocross is an up-and-co ming offL..road park, known lately for hosting a WO RCS race this year. This was its last regular mo tocross race of the year, and there was a fair tumout. A major attraction, the RaceC o Bucks program, gra nted the winners of certain classes $60, and lower payouts to those placingsecond on dow n. The 12Scc D class was the largest of the day, and the racing was definite ly intense. In mo to one, KTM-mounted Nicholas De La Grange go t ou t into the lead; be hind him, riders were vying for th e coveted second positio n. Grant Abel fro m Gresham, Oregon, solidified his ho ld on second and stayed there to the finish. Following Abe l were D e van Ande rso n, N ick Har die, Mich ael De s pain and St e ve n Jaco bs. De La 42 Pearson's bike s were destroyed. O n t he restart , Bryan Smith got t he holeshot, over Kopp and Carr, but Carr worked his way by Kopp and swept by Smith in just a couple of laps. Smith retook the lead by halfway through the IS-Iap race . Smith and Carr pulled well away from Kopp, who in turn had a good le ad over ano ther tight race among Jethro Halbe rt , McCoy and Steve Liberty. Carr once again too k over on lap I I, and the top positions were set. McCoy and Ha lbert settled into fourth and fifth, and Nichola Cheza w o rked her way around Liberty in the closing laps for sixth. Kopp's th ird -place finish helped so lid ify his po ints win, finishing with a 16-point lead over McCoy . Arndt led th e Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance main into tum one, but Robert Lewis was leading at the end on lap one.
