Musgrave was now in th e le ad. Mike Bell w as a clos e second. Former leader Henn trailed in t hird, w ith Bacon and Eri c Baker in fourth and fifth , re specti vely. Musgrave and Bell staye d in close contact for se ve ra l la p s a nd di st a nc e d th emselves from th e pack. With Musgrave and Be ll com fort ably in first and second , the battle was brew ing for the final spot on the podiu m. H enn remained in th ird. Bake r and Bacon swapp ed positions but we re reeling in Henn. Greg Fount ain w as lur king in sixth and qu ickly catch ing the trio ahead of him. CCS Florida Region Moroso Motorsports Pork Pihokken Wins Amid Controversy By LISA THEOBALD WEST PALM BEACH, FL, JULY 25 I n a dram at ic end to the day, Jim Pihok ken won the Unlimited Gra nd Prix race by a bikelength over Marco Mart inez. Martinez was the last rider to make the grid, and he almost missed the start of the race due to suspec te d suspe nsion problem s. Pihokke n was on the gas from the d ro p of the green flag, nailing the holes hot. Mart inez was almost left be hind o n the grid and started in 10th place . Pihokken immediately opened a gap on the rest o f t he fie ld . Be hind hi m, in t he ba tt le fo r sec ond , Ed Us was being chase d do wn by Greg Melka and An t hony Cabrera. Mart inez had maneuve red into fifth by the end of the first lap. Cab rera also mo ved ahe ad and initiated a tworider batt le for sec o nd place w ith Lis. Just afte r the ha lfway flag, Cabrera nearly highsided w hile go ing through t he turn-three chicane and fell back to fifth. Mart inez was up to third; wit h each lap, he moved closer to Pihokke n, w ho was now 20 bike lengths ahead of Lis . Martinez passed Lis in the midd le of the fo urth lap, and wh en the white flag came o ut , 44 he was only 10 bikele ngt hs beh ind Pihok ken . He pulled alongside Pihokke n on th e bac k straight but co uldn't gain the advantage. It was an all-out, neck -and- neck run for the finish line , w hich resulted in Pihokken running off the track on the inside of the front chicane. Piho kken crossed the line a me re bike leng th ahea d of Martinez, whose amazing run from the back of the field to se cond place was fast enough to unofficially break his previou sly set t rack rec ord by o ne second. Race offi cials had clo c ked Piho kke n in t he high I:35s, but they didn' t reco rd lap times on Marti nez, who reported that his onboard lap timer recorded a re cordbreaki ng pace of I:34.3, whic h is a full second faster tha n the standing record. And, altho ugh it's no t officia l, CCS officials ag reed wi t h t-tarrmez that he ran faste r than his own trac k record, set last year. D uring the post race podi um int e rvie ws, Henry DeGo uw did state that comer workers had reported Pihokke n running off the track on the inside of the fron t chicane . Corner-cutting in the chicanes was one of the issues add ressed during the ride rs' meeting earlier in the day.
