( Great Lakes Championships Day 2 : Log Road MX PHOTOS BV BART NEWMAN Chapman a Champ at Log Road MX By BART NEWMAN BRONSON, MI, JULY 11 N early 1000 participants rode at the third ann ual Great Lakes Championships held at log Road MX in Bronso n, Michigan. A poor jump off the gate was all th at kept Michael Chapman from completely dominatin g the 85cc Log Road Mini Challenge , as he clicked off nine perfect laps to grab the lion's share of the $500 purse put up by Michigan's Be Pizza. Matt Maximoff was once again king of the Log Road Challenge; after a battle with his Tech-Care teammate Jason McDonald, he ro de away wi t h the w in for a big payday, t ha n ks to Blo o m Roo fing , Championship Powe rsports and MeR Suspension. Championship Powe rsports' Broc Peterson was quic kest o ff the gat e as 21 85cc riders roared into turn one. Peterson's lead lasted less t han a lap, though , before Chapman made a pass in the fast left-hand swe eper to take the lead for good aboard his KTM. With ope n tra ck ahead , Chapma n did his best Ricky Carm ichael impre ssio n and le ft th e pac k to fight over second . Peterson had it, but he was feeling the w rath of Tim Walker. Joshua Lange and James Schm aus , as all four riders rolled alo ng in fonnation for the next thr ee laps. On lap five, Walker flipped upside down , ending his charge. Meanwhile, Billy Larsen was a man on a mission. com ing th rough the pack afte r a tough start. W ith two lap s to go, C hapman was on a Sunday ride out front, Peterson was seco nd, and Larsen had fought his way into third, displacing 85 cc Junio r ride rs Lange an d Schmaus, wh o we re battling over fourth . In the e nd , it was Chapman by a mile , with Pe te rson seco nd , Larsen th ird, Lange fourt h and Schmaus fifth. "I felt really good out the re today, after a to ugh Saturd ay," Chapman to ld the crowd. "I want to than k my dad for all his suppo rt , as we ll as Nevins Motorsports and Lowe Racing." McDonald took home the $ 150 In holeshot money In the Log Road Challenge for ro unding the race prog ressed , Lund gre n could not maintain th e pace and was passed by Friebel and Ho nda rider C huck Ci sler. As a resu lt, Lundgren ended the race in fourt h. and Friebel ro de a lo ne ly race to finish in second place . Cisler was far be hind Frie be l for most of th e race , but he ended the day in third place . In the end , many rider s tho ught the race was enterta in ing . d e sp it e t he muddy conditio ns. turn one first, w ith Maximoff, Nick Adams , Dustin Pulley and Brent Miller in hot pursu it. Maximoff struck first, outbraking McDonald as the two riders headed into the black dirt . Maximoff had a roll of cash in his pocket from Saturday's event, and he must have liked the feel of that, because it didn't take long for the Privateer.net ride r to put some t ime on the field. On lap four, McDonald and Miller came together, and both riders went down . Mille r was up in a flash , los ing only one place (to Adams); McDonald dropped back to sixth, as both Pulley and ] 7-year-old John Grewe we nt around the downed ride r. Maximoff motored home fo r anot her LRC win , bringing his weekend total to more than $ 1SOO.
